Ha-Joon Chang - Economics: The User's Guide (2014) A nifty introduction to Economics for a general public, it does a pretty great job of enumerating and explaining different schools of thought, going through the history of economics and presenting current problems and possible solutions as well as explaining a lot of the things you see in the news constantly but might not be aware of what they exactly mean or how numbers can be skewed to serve particular political ends. Chang is very open in stating what many economists do not, Economics is a social science, not a hard science like mathematics although it might try to sell itself as such. It is always inherently political and politics are not a pure science in any way. Chang also openly shows his distaste for the current supremacy of the Neoclassical school of economics which he finds to be inhumane and to represent itself as something that it is not. He is very suspicious, and with good reason, of free-marker economics and presents himself as someone who in spite of not being a Marxist is very much in favour of strong governmental oversight and intervention on the economy as a way to mitigate the inhumanity of pure profit economics and as the only way to be able to create equality and to defend the planet from predatory actions. I share a lot of his ideas, even if I am more extreme than he is, but I can admire his attempt to walk a middle-path which is at least better than the prevailing ideas now. An invaluable primer for anyone who knows little of economics and wants to be able to "do economics" at least at a political level.
