The Broken Group Islands - a kayaker’s paradise on Canada’s west coast. With over 100 islands scattered within the Barkley Sound, this area is home SO much wildlife - bears, wolves, cougars, sea lions, whales and many, many sea critters. Our net bear count was 20 by the end of the weekend!! (still under hot debate because some sightings were likely the same bear…) . The inner islands offer quiet lagoons and sheltered channels where you can find float homes and rustic cabins. The outer islands give a taste of the power of the Pacific - huge swells and crazy storms have formed sea caves and arches, with gnarly old trees guarding the shoreline. Paddling through the Broken Group feels like travelling back in time. You half expect to see pirate ships anchored in sandy bays like this. . Anyways, thanks for reading my Trip Advisor review. Yesterday (August 4th) was just one of those magical days aboard the Naiad. We left the harbour and headed west into the fog with researcher Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard in his research vessel. We had heard a report of killer whales, so we headed off to check it out. And there they were! The A30s, I4s, I65s, I27s, and I35s - in an amazingly social mood. We filled our breach, spyhop, and tail lob quota for the year all in one day. It was a beautiful day; full of amazing sightings and vocals! We even caught up with Aquarius the humpback feeding among thousands of rhinoceros auklets. An amazing day on the water was had by all! . . . All photographs taken with a telephoto zoom lens and cropped for spacing; taken 200+ m from all wildlife. Care is taken in order to not disturb wildlife we are viewing. Botanical Beach, Vancouver Island, B.C. . Botanical Beach sits on the edge of Juan de Fuca Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. At low tide, visitors can walk out on the sandstone and granite outcroppings to view these phenomenally beautiful tide pools brimming with sea life.
