Films like Breathless and The 400 Blows (both made by male filmmakers) are held up as pioneering pieces of cinema, but the truth is that Agnes Varda was breaking new ground several years before they came out. "People were inventing a new way of writing and I thought we had to find a structure for cinema. I fought for a radical cinema, and I continued all my life." Varda passed away on Friday at the age of 90.

In this photograph from a year and a half ago, Agnès Varda contemplates Calder’s Blizzard at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The pioneering French filmmaker and artist met Calder in the early 1950s and the pair went on to become friends. Varda photographed Calder and his work a few times during those years, capturing a range of indelible images, from a series of now iconic views of Calder and his mobiles in the streets of Paris to tender photographs of his newborn grandson in Saché. Commissioned by the Calder Foundation, Varda made a short film in 2017, titled “when Sandy dreams,” that melds footage of the sea and a mobile in motion with photographs she took decades earlier of Calder on the beach in the south of France. In doing so, she bridged admiration for an old friend with her powerful connection to the ocean—the vessel through which she looked back on her life in the 2008 documentary “The Beaches of Agnès.” Describing her memories of Calder in an interview, Varda said, “He enjoyed the best things in life … it was about being together … just nattering, for the sheer pleasure of it. He made me realize what a privilege it is not to be ill or stupid.”

Adieu #agnesvarda An extraordinary lady. Merci Madame Belgian-born Varda has been called the mother of the French New Wave. Her first feature, #lapointecourte (1956) – which she wrote and directed with no formal training – is considered to be the film that inspired the movement. #Varda has experimented with all forms of filmmaking from shorts to documentaries to narrative feature films during her more than 60-year career. #RIP #ripagnesvarda Photo by #kevinwinter #getty
