There is something about illness, disease, disorders, poor mental health, etc... that isolates you. Suddenly, a room full of people leaves you feeling misunderstood and disconnected. I recently watched @caseforchristmovie on @netflix (check it out y’all) and something stood out to me “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel‬ ‭36:26‬ I began praying that over my life, my family, my friends, my enemies, the medical staff, and anyone in between. And as I have; I’ve met a community of people who totally get it (YOU), strangers resonate with our story, and I feel grateful for the simple, yet powerful “How are you?” I’d love to hear your stories of loneliness, fear, and isolation during your trying season and begin praying this over you as well.

||Rare Disease Day|| Today is the day I get to celebrate being rare, Yes that’s right Im a fucking unicorn! No not really, but this last year i was diagnosed with a rare vein disorder called venolymphatic malformations. Pretty much this disorder was described to me as that i have an overabundence of veins in my right leg that are pretty much “bleeding” inside of me, and have caused nodules on parts of my right leg and foot. For those of you who personally know me know that I have struggled with this all my life. I have been to countless doctors, I have had different diagnosis’, and also been put on many medications. This is something I was born with and if they would’ve been able to properly diagnose me from the beginning I could’ve been treated a long time ago and I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today. On top of my rare vein disorder I also have osteoarthritis. Which causes me a lot of pain and discomfort to the point where i can’t get out of bed, I also now walk with a slight limp and that can get pretty embarrassing at times, and now i need a total knee replacement. All before the age of 30. I just wanted to share my story with you and i’m sure more than half of you didn’t read all of this, but I wanted to shed some light on this part of my life, just because someone may portray a happy, fun, confident person on social media doesn’t mean they’re not silently suffering in real life. #rarediseaseday #vascularmalformation #venolymphaticmalformation #raredisease

It was an honor and privilege to go on my annual volunteer cleft lip, palate, and congenital defects mission trip to #hospitaldosdemayo in Lima, Peru. This was my fifth trip with #healingthechildren to Lima and has become one of my favorite weeks of the year. We operated on 115 kids and also brought speech therapists, audiologists, optometrists, pediatric dentists as well as a pediatric ophthalmologist (my wife :), including a team of pediatric ENT surgeons and plastic surgeons. These are some of the finest health professionals I’ve ever worked with and was a massive team effort. . . These trips help make me “re-calibrate” as to why I went into medicine in the first place. There is one goal on these trips- help those in need. Every single person in our 30+ group of volunteers understands that one objective and knows how crucial it is to get the job done correctly and safely. Despite the long hours etc. and limited resources no one complains because every one is there for the right reason. It is refreshing and addicting. I can’t wait to go back next year. . .
