Pikachu Update Pikachu asks your support to cover his diagnostic care via our website at www.dachshundrescuesouthflorida.com Pikachu is only six weeks old, but in the course of one week, he has found himself at MDAS due to his medical condition, rescued, seen Dr. Wemen at Everglades Animal Hospital where he was evaulated for hypermetria - a "condition of cerebellar dysfunction in which voluntary muscular movements tend to result in the movement of bodily parts (as the arm and hand) beyond the intended goal." Happily distemper was ruled out and so little Pikachu made his way south to Miami and to Dr. Wong at Southeast Veterinary Neurology where his condition was evaulated neurologically. Dr. Wong examed this sweet little peanut and noted "Cerebellar-quality ataxia. Intention tremor. Hypermetria." Dr. Wong tested Pikachu's CSF (cereberospinal fluid) which came out normal for Neospora and then Pikachu had an MRI which also came out normal (or when you are the amazing Dr. Wong "normal" = "High-field MRI of the head was performed in multiple planes and sequences including T2, FLAIR, GRE and T1. IV contrast was administered. The brain is normal. There are no structural abnormalities to account for the clinical signs." This is good news right? Everything came back normal, nothing infectious, nothing on the scan, out of the woods, right? The good news is that all diagnositc testing showed nothing more than a cerreberal disfunction. The bad news is that we have no way to know if there is some microspic malformation of Pikachu's brain that was not able to be seen on the MRI and will not progress, OR it is a degenrative condition, in which case there isn't anything we can do for him. In the mean time, we will give him the "other" best medicine we know possible (aside from High Field MRI's!) which is sunshine, grass, and the loving attention of President Pam's pack. Picachu has hit the jackpot and is chillin' with President Pam for a few weeks of observation and being loved and coached by her pack.
