A urinary cast is congealed protein or cellular debris, that forms within a renal tubule. The material or cells that form a cast may have come through a damaged glomerulus, been part of an interstitial inflammatory infiltrate, have been dead tubular cells. The cast is expelled into the urine, and maintains the shape of the tubule in which it formed. Casts reflect conditions of the kidney proper and not the lower urinary tract. LAB TECHNICIAN • • • Common in house laboratory tests we run and must know how to prep and read in house urinalysis in house fecals ear cytologies ear mite swab blood smear CBC Chemistry/Electrolytes PCV/TS HW/FELV/FIV/PARVO/GIARDIA/cPLI snap tests hand count platelets/WBC’s if/when needed canine/feline blood typing skin scrapes blood gas blood glucose iSTAT machine coag machine/tests BMBT gram stains • • • We must know how to properly handle samples. We need to know what’s in the tubes and how they affect our samples. How long samples are good for and the effects of that. A basic knowledge of what values are and mean (I.e. elevated glucose doesn’t always mean diabetic. Can be stress induced. Especially in cats). We need to know what to look for in urine/fecal/ear cytologies so that we know what is normal and what isn’t. We must know basic care of the lab equipment and do monthly inspections. Change out stains weekly to reduce secondary transfer bacteria on cytologies. We must have a basic understanding of what is zoonotic (I.e. sarcoptic mange) so that we handle that appropriately. As well as species specific mites (fleas). We must know how to properly decontaminate to reduce spread of disease - bordetella is an airborne disease while parvo is through feces and can live years.
