ULTRASOUND TERMINOLOGY ▫️ ‍Today let’s talk about ECHOGENICITY ▫️ ✍️ECHOGENICITY is a physical property of the tissues and refers to the ability to reflect or transmit US waves in the context of tissue interfaces! Whenever there is an interface of structures with different acoustic impedance, a visible difference in contrast will be apparent on the screen! ▫️ ‍Echogenicity is a measurement of echo strength, specifically the wave reflected back to the transducer! ▫️ ‍Echogenicity (the generation of returning echoes) occurs due to differences in acoustic impedance among tissue interfaces (a kind of “barrier” the tissues offers to the traveling beam)! The more acoustic impedance among interfacesthe more difficult to the ultrasound wave pass bythe more reflected echo! ▫️ ‍The amount of reflected echoes between tissue interfaces is assigned with a shade of grey (they are about 256)! The rule isthe more reflected echoes back to transducer a lighter shade of grey will be assigned to that echo!! On the other hand the less reflected echoesa darker shade of grey will then be associated to that echo!! ▫️ ‍Said that, we may put together the two statements: In which tissue interfaces we have more differences in acoustic impedances❓❓✍️Interfaces tissue-bone or tissue-air!! These interfaces will generate almost only reflection of echoes! That’s why they appear hyperechogenic!! Great case of Dioctophyma renale, the giant kidney worm, infecting the right kidney of a dog. This case was graciously provided to us @southglenveterinaryhospital #dioctophymarenale is a parasitic #roundworm that infects dogs (occasionally also cats) and other carnivores. Infects those that feed regularly on freshwater fish. I knew of this being in tropical environments like Brazil but not in Canada.
