Die ehemalige Feriensiedlung des Ministerrates der DDR, 1959 wurde der Bau von Otto Grotewohl im Stil eines Fischerdorfes auf einer Ackerfläche ohne Seeblick "befohlen", wird heute vom Bundesamt für Naturschutz für Tagungs- und Seminargäste genutzt.

Therefore, their importance for our climate is immense.

But what are peatlands❓
Peatlands are a type of #wetlands that occur in almost every country on earth. They are characterized by -surprise- consisting mainly of peat. And peat is in the end just an accumulation of organic material (e.g., plants or mosses). Due to the water, there is a lack of oxygen, and the remains of dead plants and mosses do not fully decompose Therefore, a layer of organic material accumulates over time.
They also have some very unique
species and #biodiversity.

This is the reason why peatland #ecosystems are important habitats recognized under various international conventions and dealt with by many international organisations.

At the International Academy for Nature Conservation we invited many representatives form these institutions to discuss how to better create synergies among their efforts!
