Every year at Wangaratta there’s some amazing experience I could never have imagined. This time it was the all-girl big band from Geelong playing with Harlem-born singer songwriter Vivian Sessoms who is currently touring Australia. . . The Sweethearts, as Vivian said in her introduction, are keeping soul alive and taking it from Australia to the world, playing at international festivals including Montreux in 2017. Their musicians change year to year, drawing on emerging talent from the Geelong region: most of the young women here were headed from the festival back to school to do their end of year exams, but they tore it up at Wangaratta with their killer horn section, power vocals, and solos on guitar, keyboards and drums. Vivian joined them for couple of numbers in the middle of their set, including the Nina Simone number ‘See Line Woman’. . . Vivian Sessoms @viviansessoms gave a brilliant set the day before this in a quartet with Chris Parks on bass, Brenton Foster piano and Hamish Stuart drums. A highlight of that was her performance of the Billy Holiday composition ‘Strange Fruit’, completely reimagined and completely unsettling, as it is meant to be.
