Unicorniquest - Episode 6 Valentini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 1975 For those in the know, spotting a 70s Valentini in the wild is almost unheard of. This red is only made in very select vintages the flagbearer of the Abruzzo region deems of high enough quality. Notoriously hard to find and wine that needs age but gets typically drunk way too young. This is in a way comparable to Rayas and Soldera, unquestionably the best wines of their respective regions yet being vastly different from the typical expression of the region. Having now tried a couple of younger and older vintages, they feel stylistically closest to a brooding spicy hermitage with southern rhône animality and ripeness with a nice Italian volatile touch on a body of black fruit salty soil tones. Fascinating and unique wine. Unicorn Obviously. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#sommlife#whiteburgundy#chardonnay#winelover#finewine#valentini#montepulcianodabruzzo #unicorn

From 2009 to 1969 in five wines (Part 2) Henri Boillot - Chevalier Montrachet 1999. In this blind flight of five wines spanning fifty years it was clear within a sniff and a sip this was my favourite. It was drinking at peak showing fully integrated wood, honey, lime juice, poached pear, cinnamon and salty undertones. Vibrant acid backbone showing the essence of Chevalier, a plot that fared extremely well this year where overripeness was a common issue. I notice in conversations with wine enthusiast that many do not regard Henri Boillot’s wines that highly. I genuinely don’t understand why other than they get consumed too young. Take a Puligny Clos de la Mouchère for example which is a grand cru in every dimension except name and price. Or his Puligny Pucelles which has long taken over the position as flagbearer of this plot. But in my view they do need a decade to fully come together, not unlike their official grand cru siblings. Boillot’s white grand crus (with the exception of the fairly recently acquired plot of Batard) are all négoce wines. Without disclosing the source of these Chevalier grapes, it goes to show the utmost importance of elevage for white wines. The same vintage bottled by the grower has turned into an oxidized mess. My blind guess? I was hovering between a Corton Charlemagne and a Chevalier and guessed for the latter and settled on Boillot Chevalier Montrachet 2001 or 2004. Close enough. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#whiteburgundy#chardonnay#winelover#finewine#burgundy#bourgogne#grandcru#whitewine#henriboillot #boillot#chevytothelevy #chevalier#chevaliermontrachet

One of the current producers that is on top of their game is Paul Pillot where 4th generation Thierry Pillot has been gradually transforming the winemaking to his vision. I’d certainly classify them as ‘nouveau-Chassagne’ if there would be such a movement. Gone are the days where less favourable plots like Clos-St-Jean (which would probably have been better planted with pinot) resulted in easy going early drinking wines. Here everything is tuned up a notch or two in terms of tension and acidity. For this trio of 2016s the terroir differences are not obvious as they are all still very much dominated by their youthful structure and wall of acids. Still, the wine that one would expect to outperform (Les Caillerets) did indeed show the best with a nice underlying core of ripe fruit on top of the firm yet fresh structure. And judging by some recently tasted bottles of his profound Chassagne La Romanée 2011, these wines seem to shape up very nicely with some bottle age. Recommended. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#whiteburgundy#chardonnay#winelover#finewine#burgundy#bourgogne#grandcru#whitewine#paulpillot#chassagne#pillot#chassagnemontrachet#staubin#caillerets

Raveneau Chablis Clos 2003 Not a single soul that was served this wine blind even considered Chablis. The hot vintage clearly resulted in a very atypical wine but the richness and purity of fruit is truly remarkable. Lemon and mineral seekers need not apply. If I had to summarize it would be peach yoghurt, in terms of flavour and viscosity. I would concur with what @wgfkelley said about this wine: “dense, concentrated and young. Can live forever”. Similar to Marc Colin’s 2003 Montrachet it just feels the fruit is too strong to be impacted by age. Of course it will but I wouldn’t be surprised if this remains as it is today for another decade. Fascinating wine that shows a very ripe expression of chardonnay unadulterated by flashy new oak. Mediocre winemakers should learn from this and stop using and abusing the fundamentally flawed idea ‘since the fruit can handle it’. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#whiteburgundy#chardonnay#winelover#finewine#burgundy#bourgogne#grandcru#whitewine#raveneau #francoisraveneau #chablis#lesclos#chablislesclos #2003

A tale of three Bordeaux. Showdown between Haut Brion, Lafite and Latour, all from the 2000 vintage and given a two hour decant. Haut Brion the gentlest, Latour the firmest and Lafite simply the best. Similar to some recently tasted 2005 bordeauxs these wines are approachable yet a bit less ripe and fruitforward. Latour showed a strong cabernet leafiness with the firmest tannins, clearly in need of a decade or two. Lafite was classic Pauilac with an amazing concentration, silky palate with the most refined and ripe tannins you can wish for. It did seriously remind me of the 1996. Haut Brion had some red fruit characters with stronger acid and minerally undertones. Elegant. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#whiteburgundy#chardonnay#winelover#finewine#burgundy#bourgogne#grandcru#whitewine#lafiterothschild #latour#hautbrion#chateaulatour #chateauhautbrion #chateaulafiterothschild #lafite

Unicorniquest - Episode 3. Prieuré Saint Christophe Vin de Savoie Mondeuse Prestige 2003. It was actually this wine that triggered the unicorn series as I unknowingly commented on a post a while ago questioning rarity versus quality and was basically corrected by some random dude telling me that “this is a unicorn”. Something that always triggers mildly allergic reactions on my side. So I was very happy this bottle show up blind a while later, only possible to be brought by @cyberk13 and @bistro_amber, the progressive wine evangelists of Singapore. Served blind I was thinking on a cooler northern rhône vintage from an oldschool producer given the spicy and stemmy notes. At the same time it was a touch too light coloured and pinot-esque with a softer than expected tannin profile that didn’t truly match. At least Mondeuse is genetically related to Syrah so I was not a million miles off, at least that’s what I told myself Unquestionably impressive in the context of Mondeuse, Savoie and maintaining 12% alcohol in this blistering 2003 vintage. Juicy with a fine elegance to it, lifted by the acidity. A touch lightweight on the mid palate but drinking well. So is it a unicorn? In terms of rarity it certainly qualifies with zero wine-searcher hits in any vintage so I am not even able to find out how the secondary market would price it. In my book qualitatively not a unicorn wine worth searching out at any price though but if you have reasonable access, it is worth a try. Variety is the spice of life after all. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#sommlife#whiteburgundy#savoie#prieuresaintchristophe #michelgrisard #mondeuse#grisard #vindesavoie

Some nicely aged Puligny Combettes. Roche de Bellène’s Collection Bellenum Puligny Montrachet Les Combettes 1993. From Potel’s part of the négoce business where he buys finished wine, from Robert Ampeau in this case is my suspicion. Only released in 2013 this has been kept in perfect conditions for two decades and it showed stunning youthfulness with bright white orchard fruit, stony notes and that great acid backbone that has made the 93s age so well. Most guesses were between 2004 and 2007. Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet Les Combettes 1990. From the six bottles I tasted from many different sources this would rank in the middle of the pack. Very Meursault in character (no surprises there) with a pronounced beurre noisette flavour with yellow apple and oranges. Lacking a touch of freshness and lightness that the best bottles have shown. Such a pity they changed the label as these scroll labels were so comfortably oldschool. Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet Les Combettes 1995. Typical Sauzet with buttered pinepple but for me there is always something missing in the 1995 whites to keep them away from greatness. I guess this was just a bit too simple and easygoing but a very nice drinking wine without a doubt. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#sommlife#whiteburgundy#chardonnay#winelover#finewine#burgundy#bourgogne#grandcru#whitewine#etiennesauzet #sauzet#puligny#pulignymontrachet#rochedebellene

Advanced notes of molasses, butterscotch and baked apple on the nose but the palate was still in quite good shape showing Montrachet heft and sophistication. Buyers beware, I stopped buying any Gagnard wine about five years ago and never looked back. #instawine#wine#wein#vino#vin#vinho#winetasting#winelover#sommelier#wineoclock#winetasting#winetime#pulignyfirst#winestagram#winegeek#sommlife#whiteburgundy#chardonnay#winelover#finewine#burgundy#bourgogne#grandcru#whitewine#fontainegagnard#lemontrachet#montrachet#gagnard
