When I first started teaching 12 years ago, there was such limited time for social emotional skills in the classroom. I'm happy to see how much that has changed, but we still have a long way to go. .
I remember teaching my first advisory group. It was all students I didn't actually see during the day. At first, that seemed weird to me, but then I thought about the impact I had as a fresh face to impact the lives of more kids. It ended up being a lot of fun!
.
Without a doubt, teaching SEL skills isn't always easy.. it takes time, planning, sometimes juggling schedules... but it is always worth it
.
Do you teach social emotional learning in your school? Is it integrated or its own learning block? .
Ps.. if you love this visual as much as I do, I made it into a set of posters! You can get the link in my profile or here: bit.ly/SELPosters

I’m in love with this book. It teaches children (and adults!) all about mindful breathing. Using happy thoughts to push out the bad ones, while still acknowledging that the bad ones exist. How to calm fears & anxieties with our magic breath. So many ways our breathing can help us with our emotions & experiences throughout the day.
•
This book is great for kids at home but I can just picture a classroom full of children practicing their breathing as the book guides them. There are prompts & visuals that make it less abstract of a concept.

Check out the Mindfulness section of my Amazon shop for a link to this book & other favorites. Link is in profile.
Some folks are impressed by PowerPoint slides with endless bullet points. We’re blown away by classroom bulletin boards...brb creating an awards show where teachers are the winners and #ClassroomDecor is a category #TeacherWins

We transformed our light studio this week to support mark making. The images encourage children to explore a variety of writing strokes and shapes that promote fine motor development. ➿〰️➰✏️✨ For a FREE digital copy of these cards... Follow, Tag a friend in the comments, and DM me the email address where you would like them sent.

If we want kids to own who they are, we have to own who we are... which is incredibly challenging living in a world that has learned to shame the majority of qualities and experiences that make us, us. I know we all have pacing guides, ridiculous mandates, and not enough time... but we are always teaching something. If you have to take a break from the math lesson to teach your students something about you so they can find the power of self-love and love for others within themselves, do it. I mean honestly, if you were a student what would you choose? Learning how to love yourself and others on your hardest of days or using proper conventions? Both are important but one often takes precedent over the other. All I’m trying to hint at is if you need to take time to teach a couple lessons out of your teacher life guide and not the reading guide— just do it YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR STUDENTS NEED... and if you’re not sure, it’s okay to ask for help #myteacherlifeguide #sel #wholechild #fridaymood
We’ve spoken before about the first 7 years of a child’s life being ‘the download years’. Where children ‘download’ each & every experience into their subconscious mind. They have ‘no filter’ (analytical/reasoning mind) during these early years —downloading both positive & negative experiences without the processing skills we as adults have. We love @brucelipton in The Biology Of Belief, where he goes into depth on the science behind the concept. Basically skills, behaviours & habits are a direct result of our experiences. We always refer back to this knowledge when we create holistic experiences, as they quite literally shape who a child becomes. And that’s what holistic learning is — about a child finding their meaning & purpose in life. If we allow children to focus on what’s next & what they are ‘getting or doing’ in future tense — it’s what they will believe for most of their lives. BUT what if we teach children to focus on what they have in the here & now? Where they see the moon, sun & stars as treasure. Where they use their hands to create. Where they use their hearts to love & their eyes to seek wonder. It starts with us, as the teachers, parents & community — our role is to create the experiences that will literally shape the lives of future generations✨ #holisticeducation
