“Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing”- Helen Keller. . . Before this day ends, we honor one of the most inspirational woman, Helen Keller. A blind and deaf woman who I absolutely admire. . . Those who don’t know, not only am I losing my vision, but I was also recently diagnosed a couple years back with Usher Syndrome. Which means, I am also going deaf. But mannnn, how things have changed though. Haven’t cried and felt scared about my future when it comes to my disabilities in awhile. (Lets see how my next appts will be though, eek!). Anyway, maybe cause I am so caught up with making sure I am good everyday for my son and husband. And maybe cause I am living this life to the fullest and taking all the adventure I can get and continue to go on this life adventure with my family. Whether I fall, get back up, cry, laugh, struggle and so on ... it’s a crazy adventure which makes everything we face and go through worth it! Thank you Helen and to many people out there who have made such an impact in my life. I wouldn’t trade my situation and this life I have for anything. God is so good. Stay Blessed.

May is Vision Health Month! Get your eyes regularly, EVEN IF YOUR PRESCRIPTION HASN’T CHANGED - years back, @jridpath nagged me into getting my eyes checked and it turned out I had a subclinical detached retina. I had eye surgery and was told that if I had not had the surgery when I did, I would have LOST THE SIGHT IN ONE EYE within the year. I had no symptoms, no change in prescription....which is why I resisted making an eye appointment. Why do you believe in the importance of eyecare? Calling all those who are passionate about protecting the health and clear vision of their patients to share your why! For me, it was a patient with no complaints, just in for his yearly exam to renew his contact lenses. While checking his internal ocular health, a hemorrhage was found in one eye — totally asymptomatic. Blood testing revealed he had leukemia, but it was caught so early that he responded very quickly to treatment and is now cancer free! If he had just gotten his prescription renewed online without a comprehensive exam, it may have been years until his cancer was found, and at that point it would have been much more advanced and difficult to treat. Ever since I began working at @fightingblindnessca I have realized just how important it is to make your eye health a priority. Little known thing about me - I have a rare genetic eye disorder called Map Dot Fingerprint Dystrophy, which causes my corneas to develop spontaneous cuts on the surface, leading to blurred vision, dry eye and sometimes, severe eye pain. My vision changes every day, and despite the fact that surgical procedures can temporarily treat the disorder, there's no cure. "I walked outside and for the first time ever, I could actually see the leaves on the tree." Sound familiar? Well this was the memory of a 10 year old me getting my first pair of glasses that led me down the path to becoming an Optometrist. In high school, when thinking of what I wanted to do with my life and how best I could use my skills to impact the world, this is the memory that came to mind. Because such a seemingly small thing as giving someone a pair of glasses or contact lenses can completely change their world. So I told myself that if I can have this impact on at least one person every day, I can be happy knowing that I'm changing lives for the better. This is #WhyEyeCare.
