The 2nd bottle of our recent Bordeaux night. Tasted in Riedel Black Tie, the 2000 needed an hour in the decanter to fully open up with the classic dark fruits, graphite and pencil shavings. Tannins is still a little grippy but it has a good minerality undertone. Saturday was spent sipping some delicious rose by the pool and Sunday I was so excited to finally stop in for a @solovinwines wine tasting at @firehousehotel and hang with @matthewjkaner and @joshlahoma! This week's tasting was focused on Burgundy and we were able to try some really unique wines. From a Beaujolais Blanc, a really cool Gamay, to a stunning Premier Cru Burgundy, this line up was so fun and SO delicious. My usual drinking partner loves his Bordeaux but I always try to force feed him Burgundy, but when he brings a historic bottle like this, I cannot complain at all...... Tasted in Zalto Bordeaux, the cork was in tatters but the wine is still alive with some fruits left. Sensual nose with dried fruits and tertiary earth bouquet. Still lively on the palate with decent acidity. The story of Drappier estate started in 1152, when Saint Bernard, founder of the Clairvaux Abbey, built a cellar in the village of Urville located in the Aube region of Champagne. However, the Drappier family didn’t arrived until 1808, when they settled in Urville and started making champagne in the cellars built by the monks. Drappier was a pioneer in introducing Pinot Noir grapes to Aube. In fact, when the grandfather of Michel Drappier, who today run the winery, planted his first Pinot Noir vines in the 1930s, the neighbouring winegrowers laughed at him, and nicknamed him “Papa Pinot”. And he wasn’t wrong because today, Pinot Noir represents three quarters of the grapes grown in Urville. However, the use of Pinot Noir as a main grape, along with very low sulphite levels, still characterize the style of Drappier nowadays. This time I’m not enjoying a Pinot Noir but their Quattuor cuvée, it is a very unique blanc the blancs because it is made with tree forgotten grape varieties: Arbane (25%), Petit Meslier (25%) and Blanc Vrai (25%), along with the classic Chardonnay (25%). Its name means number four in Latin, after the four grape varieties used to create this special Champagne. #drinkstories #wineteller
