The Merrill-Gage House dates back to 1872 when early settlers of Winnetka, Jared Gage and Sarah Merrill, built this home for their daughter Mary. Gage's fortune was made through Chicago's first flour mill. Sadly Gage's own home, an 1857 brick Italianate on the banks of Lake Michigan, was demolished in 2013, which you can see in the last four photos (although the facade was saved and moved). At least his kid's house survives. Oh, North Shore, you're so disappointing sometimes! ☹ . . Swipe to see the four storybook cottages designed by Andrew W. Paulson in the 1920s. . Originally from Sweden, Paulson came to Chicago to work on the murals at the Great Swedish Building at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. For whatever reason, he became an architect and builder. The Rainbow Log House came first (seen in the last photo) followed by the other two cottages. Red Tile Lodge, in the third photo, was built last in 1928. Some of the homes still have their original interior details, including a sugar pot styled fireplace, a griffin staircase, and a swan lake mural. . It wouldn't be Christmas without watching your favorite holiday movie. The "Home Alone House," a Georgian originally built in 1921, is located in Winnetka, IL. The previous owners let the filmmakers use it over 25 years ago.
