Прорубь на 23 февраля оказалась не таким уж культурным мероприятием ! . Сначала нас норовили «спасти» изрядно воодушевленные различными напитками женщины в пуховиках, затем начали снимать на свои телефоны. Потом пошла стадия : « Погоди, не ныряй, я за к тебе приду, подстрахую» . На мой прямой : «не надо лезть ко мне в кадр!» следовало : «ага, щаааззз!» . Потом меня все-таки уговорили зайти погреться в специально оборудованный домик 2*2 метра (если кто не знает, такие всегда рядом с прорубями моржей). Там мне обещали жениха олигарха и тд .... . Today’s swim completely caught me off guard in the best way. Cold water, blue skies and a little corner of the west coast of Clare that was completely my own for a good thirty minutes. Often when I swim I’m completely in the moment but today I was totally in the past. As I swam across the bay I was hit by wave after wave of memories from this place (pun intended). I spent all my summers here as a kid exploring rock pools, eating sandy sandwiches, waiting for sun cream to dry, watching my grandparents awkwardly unpack deckchairs from the back of their car (they were not beach people), my dad arriving down after work and throwing me into back flips, dragging out windsurf boards and spending hours on end wrestling friends off them, jumping into Kieran’s hole, walking the headland with my first broken heart, swimming in phosphorescence, swimming with dolphins, attempting to surf tiny waves, training for surf lifesaving competitions, training to be a lifeguard. And then of course there’s the summer I finally got my dream job working here as a lifeguard. The year that completely changed my relationship with this place. I was unfortunate enough to end up in the midst of a rescue operation for a dear friend and mentor. Our community was completely rocked by the loss of this wonderful human and for the longest time I could not enjoy this place fully because that was my only lasting memory. Today almost seven years on that subconscious weight completely lifted. Today I only felt love and gratitude. This place has shaped who I am more than anywhere else on earth and has given me so much strength and so many wonderful people that are still my closest friends.
