In a 9 day span, I will be spending 6 of those days away from my children. Within a 2 month span, I will be spending 4 weekends away from my children. This is NOT what my typical schedule looks like, but a particularly busy "season" where two courses that I wanted to take and two courses I am teaching are all around the same time of year. I usually don't have a big problem with "mom guilt", but this is a lot for me. I wonder if I'm missing too many things in the "baby" stage with Logan. I wonder if it is hard for Dom to have me physically not around as much as he is coming into a new intellectual phase. . . I have been LOVING the work @alexandrasacksmd has been putting into the world. In her @ted talk, she drops this solid piece of wisdom that was exactly what I needed to hear while on a plane away from my family to pursue my passion AND allow me to develop the skills to impact the lives of others. . . I also had a great conversation with a mom friend about maximizing our time when it is time away from our kids. How we need to make that sacrifice our family is making by having us be absent "worth it". In my case at the physical therapy continuing education course this weekend, it means being fully present and absorbing as much of the material as possible. It means sitting in the front row and getting questions answered. It means taking the time to get feedback from instructors and try evaluation/treatments on different people. Basically, what I've learned is that it can actually make us get MORE out of the things we do (rather it be a weekend away with our partner or friends to unwind or a work commitment). . . So boys, if you read this someday, know how much your mom loves you and doesn't take the decision to spend time away from you and your amazing dad lightly. I'm trying to teach you that following the things that light you up will allow you to bring more light into the world. And I'll commute 2 hours in each direction for 4 days this week just to spend an hour or so in the morning with you ‍‍‍

Tomorrow I return to work & emotions are high. So many inspiring women masterfully balancing motherhood and their professions, yet here I am, a ball of nerves wondering how I’ll do. How I’ll manage to pump working in a busy OR, or how I’ll wrestle with the dreaded ‘mom guilt’. Wish me luck as I navigate this new path

A note to my younger self. If I could offer you one piece of advice it would be this: Allow yourself to be vulnerable. There’s a certain power in allowing yourself to be susceptible, to be uncomfortable and it’s important you become proficient in harnessing it at a young age. Let’s back up for a second. As I sit here and write this post, I want you to know that its not because I think have attained so much wisdom that I feel qualified to preach. Because that’s simply not true. But it is the type of thing I wish I had read at critical turning points in my own life. Both in my journey as a physician and as a person. As children, we are often told to “not cry” to “be strong.” Don’t believe that the mark of a strong women lies in her ability to hide her feelings. As adults, even highly educated adults, we cannot begin to understand how to process our emotions correctly. We can misplace, project, subdue them. But without directly addressing and processing them, we cannot begin to grow. So, do yourself a favor and always ask questions if you have them. Take risks. And humble yourself or quite frankly, the universe will do it for you. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable, Sonia. Ultimately, it will make you a better doctor, a better mother, a better friend, and a better human. Thanks @drrupawong for starting such an important dialogue. Check out some of my friends #attendinglounge and please share your own thoughts!❤️

Sharing thoughts and feelings is sometimes the hardest thing for me to do. All these words and I can’t articulate exactly what I’m trying to convey. It’s difficult for me to do in my own relationship! Which is why I talk using my hands a lot - (maybe it helps me emphasize a point?). This week definitely gave a lot of insight on ways to communicate better even if it’s just communicating with myself. Breathe. Let go. Make space for the good by letting go the bad. It was so special to get to know everyone in this way. It’s rare when you get this large of a group together and legit every single human there was so uniquely wonderful. So much kindness and compassion. So blessed to have gained so many new friends! @teawithmd @themadmusings @ryanleier I loved our little group this day. The card activity was so insightful and allowed me to get to know each of you that much more! ✨ Thank you @wearfigs & @cecilyelmas and the rest of the @lululemon crew for such an amazing opportunity this past week. ‍♀️ So much to be thankful for! Especially after the onset of the Malibu fires. Praying for all those who have lost their homes and perhaps even a loved one . . : @kebdoak (these edits are dope. Took these pics during exam week a couple weeks ago. That week was really hard for me and I didn’t post about it cause ya girl was trying to survive! On top of studying, I worked two night shifts and you can see the tired in my eyes. Pretty sure I had atleast 1 break down that week but I honestly have lost track. I wanted to share these because it’s so easy for us to forget to post the tough days, and that false representation is one of the few things I dislike about social media. But anyways to recap the exam went well and I indeed did survive! . . . . . . #whitecoatandcurls #medicalstudent #medschoolstruggle #premedadvice #lifeinmedicalschool #lifeinmedschool #minoritiesinmedicine #womeninmedicine #blackgirlwhitecoat #futuredoctor #melanindoc #womeninhealthcare #blackdoctors #medschoolmotivation #workingwomen #medstudies
