I love the words “Be Still.” But sometimes I worry that we equate them more with a relaxing morning than with a heart at rest. What does it really mean to be still?
.
As I studied Psalm 46 recently, my heart was so comforted to read the command to Be still and know that He is God. As I dug deeper into words I had read so many times before, I found myself reading through the Hebrew Lexicon. I learned something interesting. To be still means to let go, to let something fall from your hands, to relax your grip. It was a good reminder for me that I can let go of my own plans, and embrace His plan. I can let go...knowing that He will hold me through it all. I can relax my white-knuckled grip to doing it my way and trust that His way is perfect. I can stop doing it in my own strength. I can abide in Him. I can know that He is God. And because He is God, I don't have to try to be.
.
I can be still. Not just a quiet morning of relaxation...but a calm and quiet heart that it resting in His plan and His love. I can lay my burdens at His feet. I can rest safe and secure in Him. I will be still.
Fear is contagious. But so is faith. .
.
Have you ever read the story of the 12 Israelite spies in Canaan? Here’s the gist..
God has led the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery, and the time has finally come for them to take the land that God promised them... the “Promised Land”. .
God gives the people a promise and instructions (Duet 1:21). The Land is theirs, they just have to take it. “Do not be afraid and do not be discouraged”. I can’t help but imagine that God was for-warning them, knowing that their hearts were prone to fear and doubt. .
The Israelites decide they want a game plan for taking the land, so they send spies... one from each tribe (v 22). The spies saw what God had said... “it [was] a good land” (v 25). BUT... plot twist..
.
THEY WERE AFRAID. So they said they wouldn’t go (v 26). Two spies advocated for what God had told them: the land was GOOD. And it was THEIRS. They should go! But instead, the fear of only 10 men crippled an entire NATION, and caused them to doubt the God thing that God promised.
.
Is there something in your life that you’re allowing fear to cripple? What could happen if you stepped out in faith that what God said is true, is TRUE Regardless of finances, jobs, significant others, and even death or life. What is your promise? Step out in faith today. ❤️
God is good!

Do you know that, my friend? That right where you are, right where your feet are planted—it is holy ground. Not because there may be anything special about it in particular, or maybe there is—who knows?! But the place where you are standing is holy ground because no matter where you are, GOD IS WITH YOU. This circumstance, this place in your life, this feeling, this trauma—He is with you. What seems impossible or scary and makes you want to run the other way—oh friend, He is still with you. There is not a place where you can go to escape His love and His nearness. Everywhere you stand is holy ground because it all belongs to Him. So even if you’re not in love with where your feet are planted, you can still rest in the fact that right where you are, it still belongs to Him. And it’s going to be okay. Embrace where you are as the holy ground it is, and let God do His God things. It’s so worth it.
Can I get an amen?!?!

Are you carrying around something heavy that weighs down your spirit, crushes your heart, or dampens your joy? Friend, that heavy thing in your life can be what connects you to God, or it can be what separates you from Him.
.
Think of the heavy stuff as bricks, because just like your trials, bricks are heavy, hard, and rough. You can use those bricks to either build a big wall of bitterness or resentment or anger that separates you from the God you need most. Or, you can lay them down and create a path that leads you straight into His arms.
.
Today, instead of holding tight to the hurt, lay down what weighs you down, open your hands before the God who loves you, and share your heart with Him. Let your pain be a path that connects you to Him.

We say that prayer is powerful, and yet sometimes we’re slow to go there.
.
We think about that big thing and worry about that hard thing and phone a friend to vent about that frustrating thing. .
We mull it over, sit with it, strategize and prioritize as a reflex.
.
But the Creator and Redeemer God has told us to make our requests known to him, hand Him our cares and burdens, cast them. Strong’s says that is to throw, hurl, fling. What a picture.
.
What a reminder for a heart that is so often heavy laden, the Martha in us who tends to be worried and troubled about all the things.
.
May our positioning here speak of the Truth we profess. May we train our reflexes to point us to Him.
