The right decision isn’t always the most popular decision. Are you too focused on pleasing people that you compromise your own needs? There is a lot of talk these days about self love. In my opinion, self love is about investing in yourself. Loving who you are is key, but so is taking care of your mental and physical health. Over the past few years I’ve learned that the two are intertwined. Creating space for yourself is so important, and sometimes that means saying no. I try to prioritize the things in my life that keep me happy and healthy. This means I’m committed to those things above everything else. My mental state is attached to how I eat, exercise, sleep, work/life balance and the people I surround myself with. I have a family and a very demanding job. A job that I love, but requires me to be a strategic thinker and to travel quite a bit. I have to be on my 'A' game in order to succeed. With that said, my time outside of work is orchestrated in a way that allows me to be my most productive and happy self. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not perfect and I too go through plenty of ups and downs. But I find when I’m diligent with how I spend my time, I feel good inside and out. Most of us tend to make time for everyone else in our lives and our own needs become secondary. Women are especially guilty of this. We have a tendency to be people pleasers and that means we sacrifice our personal needs to accommodate others. I’ve found that making time for me, does not make me a selfish person. It actually makes me a better; mother, partner, friend, daughter, sibling, executive and mentor. When I don’t make time for me, I struggle with energy, mental clarity and mood swings. To combat this, my daily routine includes something I’m passionate about, like hiking or cooking as well as alone time to read, write or self reflect. Whatever is it that fuels you, make it a priority. Try and do one thing for yourself everyday. I promise, you are worth the effort.
