I finished a few pieces yesterday

For any of those of you who are thinking that the focus in this picture should have been on the knife, not my hand, know that it was a deliberate choice. I'm taking today off from carving to let my hand, which got over stressed last week, recover fully. It's a fitting day to do that, because today is the day that my book Carving Out a Living on the Land, published by @chelseagreenbooks comes out. One of the big lessons of that book is that of constraints, whether imposed by nature or by the market or by our own mortal bodies. I learned the hard way when I was a young man to listen to my body or suffer the consequences, and I have been more or less grappling with that failure ever since, as the same old injury threatens to rear its head. Thankfully, I can spend this drippy gray day editing a manuscript and doing a post office run of everything I made last week. As always, thanks to everyone who has shown an interest in my book. Apparently Publishers Weekly and the Boston Globe said some nice things about it and me. Hoping everyone got some sun / green / beach / relaxation time in this weekend and have something to look forward to this week. Getting to spend the weekend outside @fieldandsupply with so many of my talented friends is a reminder of the enormous, generous community I am so lucky to be part of. . It’s not often we crawl out of our studios for three whole days to be surrounded by folks as passionate, dedicated to their craft, and gracious with their knowledge & time as this group is. Diving right back into production today getting together my largest utensil order to date, and feeling just a bit fuzzier . The chopping block. The most important piece of equipment for safe and efficient axe work. Without a stable, flat and large enough surface, your safety and your ability with an axe is compromised dramatically. I have recorded what I consider to be my best YouTube video to date - “Carving Axe Safety And Use” - I highly recommend watching it! A small plank of wood on the floor is not a suitable alternative. It puts you in a poor postural position, compromises your swing and leaves your edge prone to becoming chipped if you miss. I also do not recommend sitting whilst axing. It puts considerable stress on your lower back and shoulders as well as restricts your swing. Here is my block, swipe to see various angles. You can see I have attached some essential tools to my block - one side a mallet, saw, brush and pencil. The other two axe loops and a ruler. Set them at a comfortable height to avoid having to bend over too far to access them. Position them thoughtfully, what hand do you use to to undertake that tools specific task?
