1️⃣ Yaa Asantewaa's story of bravery and fearlessness is woven into the history of Ghana.
2️⃣ She was born circa 1840 into the Ashanti Kingdom, into a family of traditional rulers. But her story is perhaps the greatest of them all.
When the area was under attack from the British, the ruler of Asante, King Prempeh, was exiled to the Seychelles.
3️⃣ For the Ashanti people, the Golden Stool is at the heart of their existence. But ignorant of this fact, British Governor Sir Frederick Hodgson made a crucial mistake. He demanded not only to sit on the Golden Stool, but also to own it.
The Ashanti people were enraged. In a village meeting, Yaa Asantewaa came forward, as the men were getting disheartened. “If you, the men of Ashanti will not go forward, then we will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight will the last of us falls in the battlefields.”
4️⃣ Her speech worked, and under the control of Yaa Asantewaa, they took on the British. It was unheard of at the time for a woman to lead in this way.
They were successful but lost many lives. The British never got their hands on the Golden Stool.
5️⃣A year later, Yaa Asantewaa too was exiled to the Seychelles. She died there, after spending 20 years on the island.
Yaa Asantewaa didn’t live to see King Prempeh allowed back to Ghana, but her legacy lives on.

Seeing a woman as head of an empire was foreign to British colonial troops during the 19th century in Africa. At this time Yaa Asantewaa was Queen Mother of the district Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire, which is now part of modern-day Ghana. She was an intellectual, a politician and a human rights activist but she was mostly known for being the woman, who led the "War of the Golden Stool" against British colonialism in 1900. After her brother's death in 1894 she used her right as Queen mother to name her grandson King of Esiju so that he could rule with her over the Empire. Unfortunately, the British quickly exiled him to the Seychelles in 1896 along with other members of the Ashanti Government. After the exile, the British governor-general demanded the Golden Stool, which had a symbolic importance to the Ashanti nation.
Yaa Asantewaa decided to organize a meeting with the remaining political members of the Ashanti government to discuss the rescue and return of the king.
She led the war against the British and although she was captured and deported, her bravery stirred a kingdom-wide movement for independence in Ghana.#Blackexcellence#BlackHistory#ProudAfrican#Ghana#Panafricanism#YaaAsantewaa#Afrofeminismus
