✨Here's a lesson I have to learn over and over again: when everything is the practice, there are no interruptions to the practice.

I am super sensitive to sound (and light, and touch, and emotions, and I guess everything) and I crave silence when I meditate. Right now I am back in Brooklyn and there is construction happening about six feet (really) outside the window of the room I practice in. From the early morning on they are banging and pounding and angrily yelling at each other.

Yesterday I was trying to write and I got so fed up at the angry boss man screaming at his team that I hollared out the window, "PLEEEASSSSE STOPPPPP YELLINGGGG!" and for like a half hour, he did. (I am sick and sound like an ogre; maybe that helped?) But as it turns out, I am not actually in control and so it eventually went back to cacophony level. Lol of course it did.

But here's the thing: sense perceptions aren't *interruptions* to the practice, they are *part* of the practice. Sounds, smells, tastes, our feet falling asleep . . . these are all things we can observe and relate to. We can notice our responses. We can, you know, observe that we are have temporarily morphed into a screaming ogre. (Just me?)

When we choose to be present for what is, we kind of don't get to choose what IS. We only get to choose how we relate to it. When we can say, "Ooh that loud noise makes my heart rate skyrocket" but still hold our seat, that is something beautiful that we get to take off of the cushion and into the rest of our lives.

Remember: Meditation is not a SKILL. It is a practice.
