What can go wrong, will go wrong. We got hit with a ton of bricks during this heat wave. About 90,000 of us lost power early Friday evening when a strong storm passed through. Seeing it coming we started putting the birds back into the coops. Winds probably at least 50mph started with torrential rain fall, a tree branch fell from our big Maples and nearly squished us and the Muscovys. When we were worried about the heat, flooding never crossed our minds. But it rained so much so fast (and because of the road work the county did) areas of our yard flooded that have never flooded before. It just happened to be right where Clarke had his 100 meat chicks. Cue panicked emergency evacuation of drowning baby chicks during a Michigan monsoon. The birds were up to their necks in cold rain water, it took us about 5 large armful scoops of birds to get them all into cardboard boxes and into the garage. Not a good situation. These soaking wet birds needed a heat source quick. But who knows when the power was coming back, our basement would flood without the sump, and with the hottest day of the year upon us we had to keep our freezers running. So we raced up to Home Depot right before they closed and finally got a generator. What a relief it was to pull the cord and have that beast start right up! By Saturday morning the estimated time for power to return was 11:30pm Cue emergency evacuation of the puppies to their grandparents houses. Clarke and I made sure all the birds had shelter and creek water. So thankful to have a water source for them, since we still had no power our well water wouldn’t flow. We roughed through the heat of the day misting each other with a kids battery operated water fan from Ace Hardware As the day came to a end, I was dying for a shower. We saw rain clouds in the distance so we got our suits on and waited. Another torrential down pour, but this time we stood out in the rain together with some Coronas and enjoyed it. Power restored by 9:30pm✨ Moral of my story: If you have thinking about making a generator purchase and are still on the fence, go get one! What a relief it is to have, a huge weight off your shoulders . . .

meet eeyore now my only cockerel, he just started crowing this morning! it was so nice to hear again — there’s just something about it. of the four roosters we’ve had, his ‘voice’ is by far the deepest. he’s a lavender orpington and his coloring is gorgeous - a perfect mix of grey-blue and lavender. the hot + humid weather this weekend is not great for our friends so they’ve been getting lots of cold watermelon and cantaloupe, cucumbers and tomatoes and ice cubes to keep everyone hydrated electrolytes and oil of oregano is a must in their water!!

Peony Poppy. When I purchased seeds in the winter, I dreamed of abundant produce and flowers. I saw the seeds for this peony poppy and fell in love. It absolutely exceeded my expectations and was well worth the wait. • • Flowers are beautiful. They’re even more beautiful when you start them from seed, nourish them for months, watch them grow a little bit each day, and finally bloom.

Smith, our white golden retriever, is showing Aaxlu how to not chase the ducks when off leash. We spend a lot of time teaching our dogs that poultry are not play toys. .. Aaxlu has been slowly getting more exposure to his ducks each day. He gets leash time amongst the flock, visits the coop with me and yesterday spent a few minutes watching from his side of the new pen inside the duck coop. When he reaches a trustworthy age (around 1.5-2 years old), he can be with his flock at night without any supervision or separation. Until then he will be trained in becoming desensitized to the farm animals as he heightens his awareness about what is an intruder to the farm. .. One very interesting fact (one which we don’t take lightly) is that this breed of dog has the strongest bite force in the world. They bite at 743 PSI—a wolf bite is 506.94 PSI and pit bulls rank at 269. These are incredibly intelligent dogs and powerful tools which require the upmost care, diligence and training. The Anatolian Shepherd is an amazing family dog, gentle to their kids and pets when properly handled. .. *PSI is pounds of pressure per square inch

Yeah, I’d say we’re having a better tomato season than last year. The heavy rainfall last summer lasted for months so my plants succumbed to blight almost immediately. We brought in very little fruit. This year, I’ve already surpassed last season’s yield. And I’m so excited because tomatoes are my favorite thing to grow. How’s your garden growing?

Excess herbs are great additions to the duck or chicken coop. I have mint taking over my life right now so I’m adding it to the duck nesting buckets regularly. Mint has cooling effects and helps to lower body temperatures in poultry (so it can be safely consumed). It also helps to repel mice and insects.
