This is my first attempt at capturing the Iris Nebula, NGC 7023, this year. It is a target that I always intended to shoot, but in previous years I have favoured other targets or gotten the settings wrong and messed it up. This year I decided to get in there early and see how it turns out. I shot this image in mid-March, possibly a little early in the year, but I didn't want to miss out on this target again. The image is made up of 1.5hrs total exposure, using my Canon 700D and Orion ED80T CF scope. It's not a bad image but as it was shot low in the sky, on a hazy night, it lacks a little detail, which the fairly short exposure doesn't help. I plan on getting more data on this target now it is higher in the sky and hopefully bring out some more of the dark dusty areas of the nebula, which you can kind of see as a starless area trailing off to the right of the nebula, in this image. The Iris Nebula is a bright reflection nebula, illuminated by a large, magnitude +7 star. The blue light of the star it reflected off dark dust that surrounds it, creating the beautiful blue glow that is said to resemble the iris flower. It is located in the construction of Cepheus and is approximately 1300 light years from earth. The bright blue area of the nebula spans approximately 6 light years. Hubble captures view of “Mystic Mountain” This craggy fantasy mountaintop enshrouded by wispy clouds looks like a bizarre landscape from Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image, which is even more dramatic than fiction, captures the chaotic activity atop a pillar of gas and dust, three light-years tall, which is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being assaulted from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks. This turbulent cosmic pinnacle lies within a tempestuous stellar nursery called the #Carina Nebula, located 7500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina. Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 observed the pillar on 1-2 February 2010. The colours in this composite image correspond to the glow of oxygen (blue), hydrogen and nitrogen (green), and sulphur (red).
