Crushing Blow.  Windstorm Monday blew a sizable tree across the hip on one of my rental houses.  Of course it had to be the one @addison_16 and I stripped and reroofed last summer and that's featured in an article in the current issue (# 281 ) of @finehomebuilding magazine. I was driving home from #ibs2019 through Arkansas when I got the call from my tenant. Cut short the sightseeing and visiting I was planning. Got home 30 hours later. Had just enough time Wednesday to cut the tree and tarp the roof before 5 in. of snow blanketed everything last night. I've never seen what happens when a hip rafter gets crushed.  As it goes  down the jack rafters thrust the walls outwards.  The wall that the ceiling joists rest on only moved a little and the plaster fractured in the corner at the ceiling.  The adjacent wall got kicked out 3+ inches completely splitting the wall/ceiling plaster joint.  My guess is since there is just some perpendicular blocks back to the first inboard ceiling joist there wasn't enough resistance to the force. Insurance adjuster got out this afternoon and said I had to wait till a structural engineer and an estimating contractor came out to take a look.  He reckoned it would take a couple weeks due to how backed up they are with other claims. Luckily the adjuster's go-to engineer is a good friend of mine and the estimating contractor is my next door neighbor.  Got an appointment for Friday at 10 am and should be able to start right away. Gotta get it done in the next couple weeks before @jlclive otherwise I'll be distracted. Current plan is to strip back to the second common rafter on each side of the hip, reframe the rafters, then resheath and reroof.
