Here’s a flashback: In March 1951, we did a story titled “Marble Canyon Damsite,” which was written and photographed by Allen C. Reed. The story begins: “It may be just the place for a dam and then it may not. That’s what the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation field crew is there to discover, but one thing is certain. It was a tough place to get into in order to find out. That’s Marble Canyon’s proposed damsite on the mighty Colorado.” The caption for the photo reads: “Looking up-river from the lower camp of the reclamation field crew. Patch of green foliage just before river turns from view is Vesey’s [sic] Paradise, named by Major Powell, on one of his river expeditions, for a botanist friend.” Vasey’s Paradise. This. Place. I’ve been lucky enough to win the “lottery” 3 times now. 10 people can try their luck a day before at the BLM office, and 10 online 4 months in advance. This isn’t an easy permit to obtain, and once you do get one, it’s a grueling 8 mile hike with no designated trail, often times in very high heat conditions. Many people go in unprepared. There have been many deaths, and plenty of rescues in this remote space. /// Solace. Solitude is something this place needs, and it’s a geologic Picasso of earths history that must be preserved. Federal land management is now pushing to allow up to 96 permits per day; thus all solitude would be lost. Overcrowding of these areas breaks my heart; we should be able to enjoy these beautiful moments in a peaceful environment. What are your thoughts on the proposal?!
