Today I braided my youngest hair before bed. Into two, tight French braids and I remembered that just a few short months ago her hair would have never stayed twisted up. It was too short, too soft. It was baby hair. But now.... it’s getting long, it’s losing those baby curls and white tint and it’s getting darker, thicker. Her little hands when she reached up to touch it weren’t extending chubby little fingers anymore. They were painted, dainty and careful. Not clumsy and lacking dexterity. When she stood up and walked out of the room to go look in the mirror I got a glimpse of her future self. She will be beautiful, she already is. She will be so strong, and she will be OBSESSED with her hair and lipstick. I can tell this is going to happen, because it’s starting already. Not long ago she fit in my lap, she had tiny little toes and a little baby gut. She stumbled on her words and she couldn’t spell her name. Not long ago, she needed me to do everything for her. Now, she has the body of a gymnast. We can have an entire conversation and she can not only spell but WRITE her own name. And mine. And many other words. And I’ll blink again and she will be in high school wearing clothes my size (if I’m lucky) and spending her time on the phone or computer or with friends at night. Not asking me to curl up on the couch and braid her hair while she tells me about her favorite princess and what her teacher told her that made her smile. As much as I joke - I ADORE my kids. Every second I think I should do more and then I get sucked into work or the house or laundry and I’m MAD at the end of the day when I see them sleep and they’ve suddenly grown. They’ve aged years right before my eyes and I hate that I didn’t put the computer away. That I got annoyed when they asked for “one more kiss” at bedtime because I was tired. It was late. But I’m always tired. And one day it’s going to be TOO late. They won’t want those extra kisses. They won’t want a kiss at all. Remember this feeling when you look at your kids and think “damn, when did they get so tall?” Because it’s a feeling you’ll get again one day — and when you do... it might be too late.
