THE ART OF SUTURING featured: a simple interrupted suture _____________________ I wanted to pop in and go over some suturing techniques that I have learned these past few months while using my @sutureskills kit! First off, technique is IMPORTANT! From the way you hold the needle driver to the way you bring the needle into the skin. 1️⃣ The way that I like to hold the needle driver is palming it, some like to put their fingers through the holes, but I find that I have more control when palming it. 2️⃣The 2/3 and 1/3 rule: The needle should be grasped at the junction of the anterior 2/3 and posterior 1/3 of the needle body. You insert the needle driver 90 degrees to the tissue surface. 3️⃣ When looping around the suture, your driver should be parallel to the wound. Make sure that every time you are looping, it is over the top of the needle, not the bottom. 4️⃣ Make sure you aren’t pulling too tight so that you don’t strangulate the skin and cut off blood supply. If you see that the skin is 5️⃣ Lastly, make sure all of your knots are on one the side of the laceration. If your knot is in the middle, that’s going to prevent proper healing of the skin. Every wound heals in different amounts of time depending on where they are on the body. These are some average times I’ve found for healing— Face: 3-5 days; Scalp 7 days; Chest and extremities: 10-14 days; Hands: 10-14 days; Back: 10-14 days. . . Suturing is an art, and just like any other art, it’s going to take practice to get better and better at it. The more you practice the better healing time and overall quality of care you can give your patients.

I’ve been studying to become a family nurse practitioner (FNP) for what seems like forever. I took breaks when I got married, when I moved to Atlanta, and, most recently, when I had my baby. But I always went back to school. Slowly but surely I chipped away at the program. It didn’t matter how long it took. I was going to complete my degree. . Did it suck to fall behind so much? Sure it did. I watched my peers go on to graduate without me. I watched students that were once behind me race ahead of me. But that was alright because the pace didn’t matter. I was going to complete my degree. . Now I return with just three classes/clinicals left until graduation. I’m returning to school as a mother now. No more time off, I have to make it work. It doesn’t matter that I’m taking the long route. I am going to complete my degree.
