BUILDING A BALANCED SMOOTHIE // Putting together a balanced smoothie can be broken down into a few key components. These principles are especially important if our smoothie is replacing a meal. I often have a smoothie for breakfast when I’m short on time (or feeling lazy) and to make sure my smoothie keeps me full for hours, I aim to include an ingredient or two from each of the following categories:⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣ High in fibre + quality source of carbs — options include oats, bananas, cauliflower, zucchini, sweet potato etc. Frozen options are great to create a thick base for your smoothie customise this based on preference and activity levels for the day.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣ Source of healthy fats — options include nuts and nut butter, seeds including chia, hemp and flax, and avocado ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ Protein — most popular options are Greek yoghurt and protein powder. In a pinch, you can also use milk, skim milk powder or high protein plant milk alternatives (soy, pea) ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ Colourful fruit and veg — add colour to adjust the flavour and include more micronutrients! these could be greens such as spinach and kale, and fresh or frozen berries etc. ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5️⃣ Add liquid of choice (preferably a milk/milk alternative or water, and not fruit juice), blend and enjoy.⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Putting it together: my smoothie as pictured consisted of oats, banana, raspberries, Greek yoghurt, almond butter, chia seeds and almond milk!⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bonus tip: if you have time, ‘eating’ your smoothie in the form of a thick smoothie bowl will help to keep you satisfied for longer. Especially if you add fruit and nuts etc. on top!
