One side of the two sided herb spiral, done! ✅ Complete with a cute little toad habitat . Toads like to burrow so I sunk a pot halfway into the soil to provide a comfy shelter. They aren’t big swimmers but they need access to shallow water because they don’t drink water, they absorb it through their skin. So this saucer should be the perfect dipping spot for our toad friends. I made sure to position the pot on the shady side of the spiral and put soil on top too for added insulation. I’ve heard some croaking in the neighborhood recently so hopefully we’ll get some new garden-mates soon! We would be grateful for their help in keeping pest populations down! . In this bed I’ve planted: alyssum, a couple varieties of thyme, lettuce, mizuna, mache, parsley, green onions, tarragon, chamomile and marjoram. Tomorrow I’ll put the finishing touches on the other side and share more process pics. Super happy with how this turned out! Yay! . Now I’m going to collapse in bed. Working outside two days straight in the first real sun of the year is always a doozy, isn’t it? Our new double spiral herb bed is done! Yay! . Why do permaculturalists love herb spirals? It gives you more grow space than a flat bed, provides lots of edge space (where the most ecological diversity is found), creates little microclimates (a sunny side, shady side, drier at the top, wetter at the bottom), and is a sacred symbol found throughout nature. . Usually permaculture spirals are single and around 5’ in diameter. I went for the double to get a more artsy element in the garden (and because I like doing things a bit extra, lol). There’s usually a water element at the bottom, we made ours a toad habitat (see previous post). Toads are beneficial friends of the garden that take care of many pests! . Design notes: put cardboard down first to suppress weeds and so you can trace the pattern. You could get really OCD about with this, I did not. Thankfully my kids and husband have taught me a lot about letting go of my perfectionism otherwise this bed would never have gotten done! Cut the cardboard with a hori hori or similar knife along your drawn lines then hammer the bamboo poles in the ground where you cut. Cutting bamboo is a breeze with a miter saw. I cut the bottoms at a 45 deg angle to make it easier to drive in. I was taping the cuts at first, worried it would split, that was unnecessary. It WILL split however if you don’t precut the cardboard or if it hits hard rocks or debris when you’re hammering it in. If you have rocky soil you may want to stick a shovel in along the lines to loosen up the soil first. I had some wonderful decomposing straw on hand that I lined the bed with so the soil didn’t fall out the sides. This also inoculated the bed with tons of worms, woot! Fill it up with soil and you’re ready to plant! . In these beds I’m growing: cilantro, parsley, four types of thyme, one fennel for my daughter to snack on, chamomile, chives, lettuce, mizuna, mache, summer savory, marjoram, tarragon, self-heal, green onions, and alyssum. . Sneak peak of the new spiral bed! If you’ve studied permaculture at all you’ve probably heard about the famous herb spiral bed. It’s a garden staple for permies. It gives you more grow space than a flat bed, provides lots of edge space (where the most ecological diversity is found), creates little microclimates (a sunny side, shady side, drier at the top, wetter at the bottom), and is a sacred symbol found throughout nature. If you’re short on space an herb spiral is a great design to incorporate into your garden! . I decided to add a spiral to to our veggie area because I wanted something artsy, that was my primary reason. The garden is absolutely a place where you can get creative and funky! IMO the most lively and fun gardens are ones that have a clear emphasis on being artsy, which is different than an emphasis on “pretty” or “beautiful” (though they end up being both). I can’t wait for the coming years to incorporate more weird artsy shit into my garden now that most of the foundational design is done. . I made our spiral with different sizes of bamboo and scrap wood. It’s taken more work then I thought so I’m not sure I’d recommend using bamboo unless you’re in love with the look and have a free source. You can make them out of just about anything. I’m going to line ours with straw so the soil doesn’t fall out the sides. I’ll plant it with culinary and medicinal herbs. . I had a little problem with snails all over my garden and one rainy afternoon my friend Terry came over and collected a bucket load of them for her chooks. She did this a couple of times and ever since, I have had no more snail problems... and Terry's chooks are a picture of health!!
