Why haven't the big coffee shop chains ditched single use takeaway cups yet? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2.5 billion takeaway coffee cups are thrown away each year - and only 0.25% of them are recycled. The plastic and paper in the lining, which makes them heatproof and stops leaks, makes it harder to recycle them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the UK, government recently rejected a "latte levy" (a 25p extra charge on single use cups) as ministers argued it was better for shops to offer voluntary discounts to customers bringing their own. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, research has shown that incentive schemes like this generally have low uptake and don't make enough of a difference in the fight against plastic pollution. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Independent coffee shop chain @btpcafes boldly committed to living their values last summer by banning single use cups altogether - introducing a @keepcup rental scheme and encouraging customers to bring their own instead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However reports now show that their sales have fallen by £250,000 since introducing the ban. The company said they had factored the loss in takings into their plans and that too many operators were "putting their profits before the planet". ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They previously made £1m in takeaway coffees per year but now sales are down 25%. Most customers have been supportive of their stance on single use, but it's clear from these financial reports why the bigger chains haven't followed their lead and chosen to put planet above profit. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Boston Tea Party said: "We felt this was a financial loss we had to take and we want this to be a call to action to other companies. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At the moment bigger businesses are deploying a smoke and mirrors strategy and not resolving problems while seeming like they are doing something about it. We are 100% committed and there's no going back." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since introducing the ban, they have stopped 125,000 cups going to landfill and sold 40,000 reusable coffee cups! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It goes to show why we need to support our local, ethical and sustainable businesses! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you shop local?

Hello New and Old Friends . I thought I would take a min to re-introduce myself. . My name is Melissa Parkos - owner at Jori + June. A few things I relate and identify with: ● A Bereaved Mother. We lost our first born son RJ at 31 weeks. He was born still. We were living in Shanghai at the time. Losing a child is an experience and pain that is hard to describe, but also one that helped shape who I am. ● A Mother. To 2 boys (5 and 7) and 1 girl (20 months) they are everything BUT also make this entrepreneur gig a little tough ) ● A Wife. To a man I adore. We love hard and "disagree" hard but he has supported my dreams full heartedly and is always the shoulder I cry on. ● A traveler. I LOVE to travel. I lived and studied in Sweden during college and was able to travel through Europe (all while racking up those student loans ‍♀️). I also lived and worked in Shanghai and Istanbul for Best Buy. ● A learner. I have a BA in business admin and my masters degree in Marketing. I was the student who was always studying. ● A professional. Most of my "adult" career was at Best Buy Corporation in Supply Chain (inventory management) and in Marketing. I loved working for a large company and those skills have helped me prepare for being a small business owner. ● A friend. My tribe is everything. I am a loyal friend who will go to bat for you. I love to meet people and am open to anyone and everyone. ● An advocate for Women. I love supporting other women entrepreneurs or makers. Watching them grow and succeed brings me great joy. Those are just a few . I of course love fashion and style. But that is not why I do this. I never claim to be a "fashionista". I love creating experiences and finding items that are versatile, easy to wear and unique. My body has been through 4 babies - so I understand the fluctuations and struggles to find items that work. Am I perfect? HECK NO. I screw up daily. We test items that sometimes kill and sometimes flop. But that is part of learning and growing.
