This abandoned cinema is an incredibly rare gem. I’ll explain. As a starter it’s ridiculous old: early 1900s. The style: Art Nouveau. Very common, very popular. But what makes it so exceptional is the fact it still exist post-USSR. When the Soviet Union expanded its territory and built its empire, Art Nouveau as an architectural style was considered an ornamental crime and misdeed. Art Nouveau was linked to glamour, bourgeoisie and luxury — ideologies that didn’t fit the socialist mindset. Most buildings pre-dating the Soviet Union were simply destroyed & flattened, erased from the public view and from our memories. . Dominating the skyline of Tbilisi we find the monumental work of a postmodernist hero: The Palace of Rituals, by architect Victor Djorbenadze. The sheer size and cost of this project was a big scandal and was met with a lot of criticism because the architect dared to subvert traditional Soviet architectural ideology. The floor plan for example was based on the anatomical cross-section of the female reproductive system. Seen from above we first have the main entrance (= vagina); on both sides we have the chapels (= ovaries), and in the center we find the altar (= womb), where man and woman unite - creating new life. At one point in history someone in Moscow actually approved this concept, and I’m very glad they did because it’s an absolute marvel too see.
