Banded pogo hops . I had been trying to find a way to loaded pogo hops without having to rely on dumbbells or barbells. I have barbells and dumbbells in the past, but they never felt that great to me - my ground contact times always felt compromised and if the point of the drill is to be “springy” you don’t want to spend too much time on the ground . Banded pogos on the other hand felt much quicker, but also did concern be me the same way weights on my back might. . The bands add a unique stimulus, because of 3 reason. . 1) the band’s resistance at the bottom is pretty low. This allows for the speed of the movement to not be compromised. If there was a heavy load on my back, it would be there the whole time and then load of it would increase the ground contacts. . . 2)The band keeps me “in line”. Because the bands are anchored, I line of pull stays the same. When doing this with weights, especially dumbbells the weights can begin to sway and your focus is removed from being springy to make sure you regather yourself. . . 3) the bands pull you down - the bands help accelerate the rate at which we fall, this increase the velocity aspect of loading without changing the mass . . YOU DON'T HAVE "BAD KNEES" . Let me reiterate that title up there. You do not have bad knees. But you may have knees that can't tolerate a lot...yet. . A lot of people deal with knee pain and are often afraid to work the knee really hard for fear of overloading it. So thoughts like "squats are bad for me" or "that movement will hurt you" often prevail. . When someone says to me, "I have bad knees (or whatever body part). What should I do?", 99.9% of the time my first answer is that you first need to get rid of thought that you have bad knees. . This mentality breeds a state of fragility. It breeds a mindset that you are a victim to your surroundings and cannot move yourself forward due to this overwhelming obstacle. And it sets a poor expectation for improvement. . So as cliche as it sounds, the first thing you need to do to get better is believe that you can. And that starts with ridding yourself of this label that something about you is broken or worn down. . You don't have bad knees. But you may have knees that are a bit sensitive right now. You may have knees that can't tolerate a lot of load right now. . But that doesn't mean they can't get better. Or that they can't get stronger. Or that they can't learn to tolerate load again. It's all in the time, the progression, and the work you put in. . Most people can sit to a chair. Maybe you need to raise the height up. Maybe you need to sit back into your heels or keep a vertical shin. But do what you have to do. Sit down and stand back up. . Then shift one leg out a bit so you bias the other. Then go a bit further. And a bit further still. As you tolerate one, you progress a bit further. . Before you know it, you can stand from that chair with ease. And you can take the stairs and run downhill and maybe even start squatting with a bar again. Or maybe you're just stoked to be able to stand up from that chair without using your arms. . But work at it. . You don't have bad knees. You just have knees that need to start a little slower. We’re trying to load our hips as much as possible and transition our weight from our outside leg into the opposite leg while making contact with the ziod in the middle of the transition. Most importantly trying to stick our landing properly going from acceleration to deceleration.
