One of the most common questions I get from parents looking to get started with cloth is how to wash. Do I need to soak? What temperature? So many questions! ⠀⠀ Washing isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. What works for you will depend on your machine, how hard or soft your water is, and the kind of nappies you’re washing. However, there are some general principles: ⠀⠀ Store your dirty nappies dry in a nappy pail with mesh bag or hanging wet bag. Make sure you remove inserts and fold back Velcro when you put nappies into the pail. When it comes to laundry day, transfer the mesh bag or wet bag open into the washing machine. Start with a short, cold wash. I use my machine’s standard 30deg wash (1 hour) without spin. You could use a rinse cycle, though check if your machine recycles water from rinses into the next main wash. I don’t use detergent in this wash because I live in a hard water area so need to avoid detergent build up. But if you’re in a softer water area and are more concerned about getting a good clean, you could use a half dose. Run your machine’s longest cycle at 40 or 60deg. I always use 60 but check the labels for what your nappies can tolerate. Add up to a full dose of detergent (again, I use slightly less because of build up worries!) If you’ve still got suds in the machine after your main wash, run another short rinse cycle to clear out the remaining detergent. I never need to do this step because I go easy on detergent! ⠀⠀ Any non-bio detergent should work fine - we use Aldi, although when the current lot has run out, I’m planning to switch to @my_ecoegg thanks to a rec from the lovely @elizabethgiannelli! Nappies don’t like fabric softener, so avoid that! ⠀⠀ As always, super happy to answer any questions in my DMs ♥️
