The Whirlpool Galaxy, also known as Messier 51a and NGC 5194, is an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy that lies in the constellation Canes Venatici. It was the first galaxy to ever be classified as a spiral galaxy, and its distance is approximately 15-35 million lightyears away. M51 is found by following the easternmost star of the Big Dipper, Eta Ursae Majoris, and going 3.5° southwest. It is a circumpolar for observers located above 43°N latitude meaning it never sets, but it reaches high altitudes throughout the northern hemisphere making it an favorite target from the early hours in winter through the end of spring season.
M51 is visible through binoculars under dark sky conditions, and it can be resolved in detail with modern amateur telescopes of all sizes. When seen through a 100 mm telescope the basic outlines of M51 and its companion are visible. Under dark skies, with a moderate eyepiece, through a telescope of at least 150mm, you can see M51's intrinsic spiral structure (with more detail becoming apparent with larger aperture scopes). As is usual for galaxies though, the true extent of its structure can only be gathered from inspecting photographs; long exposures reveal a large nebula extending beyond the visible circular appearance.

M51 transits at 12:59:13am (MST) on Wednesday April 17, 2019. It has a visual magnitude of +8.01 and is 13.8 x 11.8 arcmin in size. All screenshots are from Sky Safari Pro 5 (iPhone), and text was sourced from Wikipedia. The 1st image is from the ESA/Hubble team, the 2nd is from Instagram user @varnius, the third is from High Point's own Dave Barrett, and the 4th is a sketch made by William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse (in 1845), which was the first to describe this as a "spiral-shaped object".
