Went to our 30 week baby appointment today & I still can’t believe how quickly this pregnancy is going. I still feel like I have so much to do, but I also need to cherish this time with Clara while she’s still an only child. Baby boy is perfectly healthy, which means it’s time to start readying the house for our home birth. I still need to order my birth kit, prepare all the little spaces for labor, and make frozen meals for postpartum. Things are gearing up and I’m getting more excited everyday!

It’s Plastic Free July and we’ll be doing our bit to ensure that nappies are included in the conversation. Top of the discussion are usually coffee cups, ear buds and straws but single use nappies are one of the worst offenders.⠀ ⠀ Part of the problem is that we still don’t think of single-use nappies as plastic. But they are. Most single-use nappies are about 50% plastic and 50% wood pulp - far more damaging than a coffee cup.⠀ ⠀ And we throw away eight million single-use nappies every day in the UK - over 3 billion times a year, which adds up to 400,000 tonnes. And coffee cups? Just 25,000 tonnes.⠀ ⠀ Ocean plastic is very much on people’s minds - and when it comes to the oceans then nappies really are nasties. Degrading nappies release a host of pretty potent chemicals that threaten marine life - and of course, rather a lot of untreated poo.⠀ ⠀ If we're serious about changing our plastic habit, we need to look at the easy wins. And it doesn't get much easier than switching to reusable nappies. It's hard to find food that isn't over-packaged. It's hard to quit the plastic coffee cups if that's all that's on offer.⠀ ⠀ But with single-use nappies, you don't have to fight the retailers. You don't have to shop elsewhere or remember your reusable mug at all times.⠀ ⠀ Switching to cloth simply means a quick online purchase and you’re on your way. ⠀ ⠀ Someone somewhere has somehow managed to plant the idea that reusable nappies are ‘hard’. That single-use are easy and convenient. That, perhaps, is the other reason why people aren’t discussing single-use nappies. They don’t want to make a change they perceive as difficult.⠀ ⠀ Let’s take a moment to think about that. You pick up a nappy. You wrap it around your baby’s bum. Then you wash it. Cloth bumming... Before he even entered the world I knew I wanted to use washable nappies and wipes - they say a disposable takes 500 years to decompose! I started at around 6-7 weeks but next time would do from birth! What do we love... Hands up if you watched War on Plastic, on @bbcone this evening. @itsanitarani and Hugh were going for wet wipes this evening and rightly so⠀ .⠀ Wet wipes are made from 84% plastic. Horrifying. In fact, a friend of mine messaged me during the program with this little nugget "I need reusable wipes ASAP! Getting the dry boak at the fact wet wipes contain 84% plastic" ⠀ .⠀ We at Cheeky Wipes know about the plastic in wipes and I often forget that people probably don't think about it that often, when it's not something they discuss on a daily basis⠀ .⠀ I imagine this evening has been eye opening for many. In fact, judging by our inboxes, it definitely has been!⠀ .⠀ Spread the word about washable wipes, period pants, period pads and makeup wipes.
