Postpartum Depression (PPD) told me that I was not good enough. It told me that I was alone in what I was feeling. PPD made me cry. It made some days emotionally difficult. PPD made me feel angry. It made me feel so much anxiety and it gave me so many sleepless nights. PPD made me believe in SO MANY lies. PPD, you had a good hold on me at one point but I fought with everything I had - everything you thought you got a hold of - and proved you wrong. With all that said - PPD also doesn’t define the person I am. It is a piece of who I am. It was part of my past and something I continue to push against in the present but it isn’t all that I am. . This week is Maternal Mental Health Week and today us Maternal Mental Heath Day. As many as 1 in 5 new mothers experience some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. . It’s something, I feel, often goes unnoticed and untreated. It can affect any woman of any culture, age, race, and income level. The stigma around maternal mental health, even mental health in general, often have women hiding what they’re experiencing for fear of judgment or the thought of their children being taken away from them. You can never truly know who is experiencing Postpartum Depression just by looking at them. . Having that support - medical providers, partners, family, friends - can make ALL THE DIFFERENCE. At the very beginning I felt so alone and uncertain of what I was feeling. Postpartum Depression was always just quickly discussed during doctor visits so I never thought it would happen to me. Having that support made all the difference for me. . I will continue to share my own personal experience in hopes to help others know there isn’t anything wrong with them. That you can overcome this. THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE. . Here’s to bringing more awareness to maternal mental health. To educating people early on in hopes of knowing signs early in. To put more resources into helping with recovery.
