Blue lightis all over the news these days, with very alarming headlines suggesting that the LED screen you’re staring at this very moment is blinding you . —— So can blue light from LED screens and household lamps cause blindness? Yes...but most likely no, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Harvard Medical School. —— Facts: ✅ Blue light has been shown to cause retinal toxicity in the lab (Ratnayake et al. Sci Rep 2018). BUT ✅ The amount of blue light emitted from everyday tablet, phone, and computer screens is likely too low to cause real harm. IN FACT ✅ Blue light from electronic devices is no more damaging than the blue light produced by the sun ☀️, the largest source (10x greater) of ambient blue light. —— BOTTOM LINE ANY exposure to ANY light at high enough intensity can cause damage to the retina. The effect of chronic blue light exposure from everyday devices is likely negligible, but more studies are needed. —— If you’re still worried, you can take the following precautions: 1️⃣ Never stare directly at any light source 2️⃣ Buy warmer rather than cooler white lights because they emit less blue light. 3️⃣ Use blue light blocking glasses, but be aware that there are no scientific studies that demonstrate protection against retinal diseases like macular degeneration. Advertisers even have been fined for making such claims. 4️⃣ Reduce real risk factors that have been proven to cause eye disease including smoking, sun exposure, and cardiovascular disease. 5️⃣ Avoid bright screens at night to improve sleep. things you find while packing: a collection of expired sutures and ties and parts of suture removal kits. super grateful for all of the nurses and techs who shoved these in my pockets so that i could take them home and practice ☺️ • i was taught to practice with 2-0 silk ties barehanded first. once i had the movements down then practice with gloves, and then gloves with oil to mimic a bloody field. definitely not there yet but something i’m working on before intern year starts! now back to packing...

First and foremost, I am a physician. These days I’ve been wearing many hats. I absolutely love the side hustles that I’ve been blessed to pursue, but my main and primary job will ALWAYS be providing medical care as a physician. That will never change. - - - Many have asked how I balance my full time job with my other interests. The truth is — I only work on all my extracurricular activities every other week (when I’m NOT working at the hospital). As a Hospitalist, I work 7 days in a row, followed by 7 full days off. This job allows me to pursue my main passion (Medicine) while also having time to enjoy my other hobbies and work on side hustles. It’s all about balance, my loves! Find a job with a schedule that fits your needs and lifestyle❤️ - - When I’m working at the hospital, I put myself IN THE ZONE.
