After her selfless deed went #viral, it drew an onslaught of volunteers locally and donations nationally, leading to last week’s appearance on @theellenshow. There, she got a $50K gift from @walmart, which the 34-year-old turned around and donated to her nonprofit, #ActionForACause. A humble and successful businesswoman, Payne’s life has been forever changed by what began as worry for those outside during a spell predicted to bring the most frigid Chicago temps in decades. “Those five days gave me a new purpose,” she said in a recent chat. “For five days, my life, my heart, was there with the homeless. For them to share their stories with me, to listen to them, cry with them, understand there are so many different reasons for why they’re where they’re at. I realized that was just a temporary fix.” Payne’s two-year-old nonprofit now has focused on helping the homeless. Her @gofundme has brought in about $25K, to build multi-unit housing for the homeless, and economical night shelters. Chicagoans cocooned during the vortex that brought temps under -20 degrees Jan. 30-31. Then word spread of the efforts of a #goodSamaritan to shelter the homeless at the #AmberInn on the #SouthSide, the only hotel that would take them. Payne initially was leery of the spotlight. But when folks speculated it was some wealthy/famous benefactor, she felt it important to let people know it was, as she says, “a working black woman .... ”

As temperatures dipped to 30 degrees below zero last week, many homeless Chicagoans were literally left out in the cold. Although the city offers shelters and warming centers across the metropolitan area, there are usually thousands of people who can be found under bridges and behind lighted garbage cans in frigid temperatures. . . || Thanks to Candice, many of those without housing found a warm place to stay for a few below zero days. . . || Candice purchased 70 hotel rooms for people who were stuck on the streets...with only boxes and dirty blankets to keep warm.
