Sensitive topic alert. ⠀⠀ ‍‍‍ Carried Shame.... ⠀⠀ ‍‍ Shame and self hate are learnt behaviours. The likelihood is they originate in something to do with your original caregivers. This can be a difficult topic to talk about, especially if you feel your childhood was a good one, which it might have been. The thing we don’t know until we older is that, when we were small our parents still had stuff they needed to figure out for themselves. ⠀⠀ ‍‍ As children anything unresolved in our parents can be unconsciously transferred into us. So, if your parent felt, for example, not good enough, you might also end up carrying their feelings of shame. This is how shame and trauma travel through families. ⠀⠀ ‍‍‍ Because of the amount of stigma and lack of awareness surrounding mental health in previous generations many of us have been taught to hide our imperfections and present our upbringing as ‘perfect’. We ignore our feelings, keep family secrets and learn not to trust. ⠀⠀ ‍ From the moment you move away from your family of origin, you can, theoretically, make your own choices and explore the world as you wish. But often we carry the effects of family shame with us. You might enjoy the idea that you are now, in effect, self sufficient but find you do little to challenge the shame based beliefs you carry. ⠀⠀ ️‍♀️ The mental health workout around carried shame is accepting, without blaming, that your parents did the best they could with what they had. I know this may be a hard pill for some to swallow, but here’s the deal: often because of the pain of your own childhood, you cling to motherhood as a life preserver. The pendulum swings and now you’ve become best friends with your child— a result of the parental wounds you carry that you hope will be fixed + healed by this new relationship. _____ There’s nothing wrong with being close to your child. I believe as children mature, a natural “friendship” may develop. However it’s important for children to remember they are always the child, and you, always the parent. It’s safe for them. Secure. Consistent. This should never change. This can’t happen when you need your child as a friend. ____ Children will always step into a best friend role with you if YOU let them. They love to help, and always look for ways to be needed. Make sure it’s not in the ways that could harm them, by carrying + comforting for you. _____ I was asked yesterday “I’m an adult now and my mom will occasionally talk to me about her marriage difficulties with my dad. Do you think this is okay?” ___ My answer was: “does it feel okay? Do you feel safe inside?” Most likely, deep down, it’s a “no.” That’s a territory where children don’t belong. ______ Once a child, ALWAYS the child.
