Anyone else sit in very strange (but comfortable) positions while reading or is that just me? ⁣ Review: A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway⁣ ⁣ If you watched our stories recently, you’ll notice that I recently purchased this book from a discount rack and was very excited because I’d read this ages ago but had borrowed it from the library. Although I have mixed emotions about this book, I was still ecstatic to find it for a steal. Anyway, getting down to the actual review. I do enjoy Hemingway’s writing, and in particular appreciate his lack of verbal embellishment to his stories with a trademark lack of adjectives. What I didn’t particularly appreciate about this book was how dispersed and scattered the narrative seemed to be, and it honestly did not fully come together until the very end. It was often difficult to gauge where in the timeline a chapter was taking place because no indication was given. ⁣ ⁣ Though Hemingway effectively depicted the state of mind of a soldier amidst war, and this is likely why the narrative was scattered, it distracted from the primary plot of Frederic’s life with Catherine. Additionally, the ending, though I won’t give it away, made me feel depressed because of the lack of any remote silver lining. Throughout the novel, Fredric’s only solace is the idea of surviving and escaping the war and living peacefully with Catherine. After making miraculous escapes to get back to the life Fredric wants, Hemingway lures the reader into a false sense of security, only for that to be ripped away leaving no glimmer of hope. Now I’m not saying I need my novels to have happy endings, but some sense of solace would have been preferred. Mr. Hemingway's manner does not seem to be quite an enduring thing, any more than was Victorian heaviness enduring. But the Hemingway manner is arresting purely as craftsmanship.
