I remember driving along a dust road, in the north of Kruger Park, South Africa. Suddenly I felt the need to stop the car and I immediately watched on my right. I at once made eye contact with a leopard which was resting on a branch, nearly completely hidden behind the leaves. It was the third time that had happened to me. The leopard was hardly visible and yet, something stopped me to stop right now and to look on that branch, as if the leopard eyes had called me. Leopards are very elusive animals. That’s why they’re often called by their nickname: “the ghost”. They are very well camouflaged and they like to stay away from strong activities (noises...) Consequently the best way to see them is to know in what type of environment they live, and to screen every single potential favorite spot: lying on a rock, under a bush or on a branch (especially in a jackalberry tree). On that hot day I was driving on a dust road of Kruger (South Africa) which is following a dry riverbed: the perfect area to see leopards! I was driving very slowly, trying to find something, until (with a bit of luck) I came along a leopard cub which was resting on a branch, just by the road. So I parked under the tree and enjoyed the sighting. The mother was probably around, busy hunting, and she left the cub behind, just like leopard mothers usually do. From the top of its branch, the cub was stalking a group of impalas (small antilopes), and I could see in its eyes that it already had the instinct of an hunter, even though it was still too young to be a threat for a group of cautious preys.
