This is a ghost story told through the blank, expressionless eyes of a deceased loved one. And yes that really is Casey Affleck under the ‘white sheet’, a very cleverly designed costume. This is a movie about grief, hopelessness, loneliness and the eternal concept of time.

It’s been called ‘pretentious’ and ‘boring’ by some but to most of us it’s a unique work of visual poetry from David Lowery. The score from Daniel Hart is something euphoric. Its comparable to how I felt watching and listening to Nicholas Britnell’s score on ‘If Beale street could talk’. It’s also filled with several long takes, none more so than the now infamous “pie eating” scene. One very deliberate and excruciatingly long take from the director, it forces us to watch on (much like Affleck’s Ghost) as helpless observers as Rooney Mara’s character, grieving alone for her husband, eats and eats and eats to the point of vomiting.

I was blown away after my first viewing a few years back and my opinion has not changed. This is one of those unique movies that must only be described as an experience. Cosmic in its delivery and much like the title song from the artist ‘Dark Rooms’, it’s at times overwhelming. One of 2017’s very best
