If you’ve been following along on our adventures you may know that our two kids, Penny and Simon have a very rare liver condition called Glycogen Storage Disease 1a. Because they lack an important enzyme in the liver, they are unable to maintain safe blood glucose levels on their own. Why does this matter? All of your organs must have glucose to function... without it you die. Many things can put extra stress on the body and affect blood glucose levels, the heat, the cold, how active you are, or being sick. We constantly walk the fine line of making sure our kids are safe and healthy. To combat this our kids must drink a cornstarch solution (yes cornstarch) every three hours day and night. With just one missed or delayed dose they can experience seizures and even death. Right now is an exciting time in the GSD world as they are actively working towards a cure! We are optimistic and hopeful for what the future may bring. This Saturday I am running a “Super Run 5k” to help raise money for GSD. Any donation big or small can make a difference. On Thursday May 23rd, 2019, 12 retired Avon Grove School District teachers came to tour and visit AGCS with Mr. Ham. Before Avon Grove Charter School was "our home" it was Avon Grove Elementary School, which these teachers called "home". Some of our staff had these teachers when they were students, so there were plenty of "hellos", hugs, smiles and stories to tell. They had a wonderful time reminiscing and would like to come back again next year with others who taught at our school, and of course, we cannot wait until they return! #agcharter #agcssoars #agsd

Last day of school for our district today. ❤️❤️ Thank you teachers, administrators, support staff, bus drivers, and everyone else in between for all that you do every year.. day in and day out for our kids! My mom was a teacher for over 30 years. It really is a career born out of either love for children or the desire to help shape and educate youth, it has to come from within.. because really it can be such a thankless job externally sometimes. Sending flowers into my sons life-shapers, including our awesome bus driver who has been with him for 3 years now is always a highlight of my year.
