Araştırma ekibi, kaldırım taşlarının üretiminde kullanılan betona titanyum dioksit eklediğinde bu maddenin temas ettiği gazlardaki nitrojen oksitin %45 oranında temizlendiğini ve fotokatalitik bir madde olan titanyum dioksitin nitrojen oksit moleküllerini hapsetiğini saptadı. Hapsedilen nitrojen oksitlerin ise güneş ışığı enerjisi sayesinde titanyum dioksit ile tepkimeye girerek çevreye zararsız olan nitratlara dönüşüp yüzeye çıkarak yağmurla birlikte suya karışıp gittiği görüldü. Those restrained nitrogen oxides were reacted with titanium dioxide by virtue of sunlight energy and turned into nitrates which are harmless to the environment and mixed with the rain by rising to the surface.
