Welcome the #lsequestrian team Fleur. @o.lable has brought this lovely mare into our program. She is a bit on the green side, her current challenge is learning to steer and move off leg. I am very excited to help Olivia bring this big beauty along. #albertahorse #albertahorses #edmontonridinglessons #newhorse #mare #chromefordays #horsesofinsta
Alberta’s wild horses are not native, but were introduced by humans to the environment, as were horses everywhere else in North America. At one point, there was a native horse species on the continent, but like many large mammals it disappeared at the end of the last glacial maximum. However, the horses we have here now have been travelling the foothills for over two centuries, inspiring humans the entire time.
In some parts of their North American range, wild horse populations are very dense, which can cause serious problems to the landscape. Not their fault, of course; they are simply doing what horses must do, but it does create problems for native species when introduced wildlife populations get unsustainably large. For more info, @charles_post is doing good work shining a light on the issues facing wild horses and the people and animals they share land with in the States.
Here in Alberta, while wild horse management faces some challenges, our cold winters and tricky terrain means the massive herds of the southern plains aren’t possible. Small family bands led by a top stallion tiptoe through forests and bogs, along rocky outcrops and down forestry roads. They share the landscape comfortably with moose and elk, white tail and mule deer, bighorn sheep and bears and wolves. They seem an integrated part of the ecosystem rather than something humans imposed on it. I like to imagine they’re filling the ecological niche vacated by the North American horse many millennia ago.
We watched this big stallion guide his band of mares and foals carefully off the road as we slowly approached. His mane swung in his face as he pivoted to ensure he never took his eyes off of us. I was pretty sure he would have challenged our van to a fight in order to protect his family, and we drove away feeling awe and respect for this beautiful group of wild spirits. : @timcarlielle

Have you ever watched a horse is working and thinking about their job, it becomes very clear you know they were created to join the cowboy. Watching them nudge a calf or even nip it on the bum shows me that horse was born to be boss of the farm animals. When a horse watches a cow and tracks in behind to set his mounted partner up for a heel loop is partnership deeper than any one person can understand, it is blessing that we are only supposed to believe in. When I see a horses eye watching everything around him in the fast passed environment of the branding pen, I know he knows what he was born to do. @coincidentalcowgirl @carson.nutting #ranchy #ranchlife #brandingseason #horse #aqha #tack #cowboy #eye #buckskin #buckskinhorse #horsephotography #albertahorses
A feral horse posing for a picture near Nordegg. Feral horses can be seen around much of Clearwater County, from near Caroline to Nordegg, along the Forestry Trunk Road, and even west or north of Abraham Lake. These herds are descendants of working horses at logging camps throughout the area and the coal mine at Nordegg.

Meet Wiley (Coyote) 5 days old.
She is full of confidence, exudes energy and loves to prance around chasing (and running away from) flies.
She is a "mini-me" of her Momma, Coyote, hence Wiley (Coyote).
We changed up the spelling from the cartoon character.
I just realized, while writing this, that it is also the last name of one of my quilting mentors @wiley_pamela !!! Now she needs to come visit her little energetic namesake ❤⭐
