The word “trauma” is loud and frightening which is why I hardly ever use it in my everyday vernacular. I think we live in a time where everyone has experienced some sort of traumatic event in their life but are told “it could always be worse” or “count your blessings because you have a lot to be thankful for.” While I think that advice means well, I believe it leaves a person feeling alone. I also believe I live in a time when asking for help is still a sign of weakness. • • • While I do believe it’s important to “get back up,” that process is a slow process. It’s not just snapping ourselves out of it. I believe the healing process requires a tremendous amount of courage, accountability, and vulnerability. • • • Thank God for lanterns like @brenebrown and @healthyisthenewskinny who light a path for people like me. • • • I’m finally taking the road less traveled... the road I’ve been avoiding for so long. I am embracing change. • • • Trauma is a word I’ve been too afraid to say aloud. Attached to it is shame, fear, and stigmas. And in the next several months I plan on kicking it’s ass. Taking away its power over me. I was having a discussion with a good friend about honest mistakes vs dishonest mistakes and their natural consequences and apologies vs changed behavior. Talking about these topics helped me become more aware of my own behavior and shed some light on behavior of others.• •Apologies admit remorse, guilt, and accountability... but some apologies are empty.
