Terassitalo / Terraced House 1937-38 Kauttua, Eura, Finland Alvar Aalto sai vuonna 1937 tehtäväkseen suunnitella Kauttuan ruukkialueen kaavoituksen ja täydennysrakentamisen A. Ahlström -yhtiön tilaamana. Siteet perinteeseen ja alueen vanhaan arkkitehtuuriin haluttiin tietoisesti katkaista ja Kauttuasta haaveiltiin uuden yhteiskuntaelämän ja modernin arkkitehtuurin näyttämöä. Ahlström company for the town planning and infill building of the Kauttua ironworks area. The ties to the tradition and old architecture of the area were deliberately cut, and instead Kauttua was envisioned as a stage for both a new communal life and modern architecture. Pääsin tänään fiilistelemään vanhalle koululleni, kun Inkeroisissa Alvar Aallon suunnittelemassa Tehtaanmäen koulussa oli avointen ovien päivä liittyen Alvar Aalto Inkeroisissa -teemapäivään. The house can only be visited by joining a guided tour and we highly recommend to book in advance. A bit of history about the building. The house, completed in 1936, was designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto to be both a family home and an architecture studio. In fact, Aalto’s office remained in this building until 1955, when Studio Aalto was completed, located within a 5 minutes walking distance from his home. The Aalto House is a cosy, intimate building for living and working, designed by the two architects for themselves, using simple uncluttered materials. The natural materials soften the form language of modern architecture. Designing their own home gave Aino and Alvar Aalto an opportunity to make various structural and material experiments. Natural light and orientation of rooms and terraces were very important for the two architects. The main living areas open towards the south and the garden to allow intimacy. The interiors were elegantly furnished in every detail. A number of meticulously thought details provide a glimpse to the life of the architect couple and their family and highlight the intermingling of living and working facilities. The studio and the family’s living areas have been discreetly separated from each other through choices of material. This can be seen in both the façades and the interiors. Aalto’s own home was his first proper building in Helsinki.
