Coffee and Caplan. || At lunch the other day I brought up the notion of voter (in)competence with some colleagues. When I was a TA during my Master's, one of the classes that I taught was on this issue, namely, what we are supposed to do with the knowledge that many voters (who, through aggregative effects, exert influence on election outcomes) have been shown to be incompetent in various ways—from harboring biases and irrational beliefs, to more straightforward ignorance about politics and the political system. Questions have been raised about whether there should be restrictions when it comes to who is allowed to vote, and ostensible solutions have ranged from minimum scores on IQ tests (very problematic) to a basic testing of knowledge about the political system. Any curtailing of voters is, of course, very controversial, and this issue sparks much heated debate. At the lunch table, the consensus seemed to be that (improved) education is the best—the most defensible—way to go about tackling bias and increasing political/democratic knowledge. Anyway, the discussion reminded me of that class, and in particular of a book that I ordered back then to consult but never got around to reading: Bryan Caplan's The Myth of the Rational Voter. Caplan argues that individuals tend to hold a set of beliefs—a particular worldview—from which, if they act on them, they derive psychological benefits. The beliefs of most people about many issues are systematically wrong, however, in the sense that the world really works differently from the way people imagine it does. In this book, he focuses on voters' ideas about economics, because so many political decisions center on economic issues. I figured I'd read the book now; since the book came out in 2007, there has been much more attention for the biases and irrationality of people generally. I wonder what, if anything, has changed. ♂️

Happy Thursday Dear #Bookdragons
- Have you ever shipped two characters from two different books ?
.
~ Well, I shipped Yrene from Throne of Glass series with Jem Carstairs from the Infernal Devices probably because I wanted Jem to get healed and Yrene is a healer plus they both are sweetest and kindest characters who wouldn’t dare to hurt innocent people but are strong and courageous enough to do anything to protect the ones they love And while Jem would appreciate Yrene for her strength and compassion, Yrene would appreciate Jem’s beauty, loyalty and demon hunting No ?

6 Reasons why reading is so similar to dating! Reason 3
Reading is similar to dating because.... If it goes wrong there will be REMORSE.
When I am displeased with a book it’s so much same as being displeased in a relationship. I wish I’ve never read it. I wish I never spent any time with it. I want to forget it, bury it deep in my back garden and live like nothing have happened. (OK. I agree maybe it’s a teeny tiny that’s extreme but… We all have that book that stole a few hours from hour lives yeah? We all had that book we turned the last page and just wanted to throw it to the wall)
.
Do you agree? When a relationship goes kaput isn't it like you start a book lovingly and end up hatingly and say urghhh why did I chose to be with you!! What was I thinking

I feel a thriller binge coming on. This book sounds so interesting! I just recently read a murder mystery and I forgot how much fun mystery/suspense/thrillers are. •
What is the last genre you binged?

—————
My Lovely Wife Synopsis:
Dexter meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting...
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.
We look like a normal couple. We're your neighbors, the parents of your kid's friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.
We all have our secrets to keeping a marriage alive.
Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.
