No name is more synonymous with the world of yacht design than Olin Stephens. His signature has been stamped not only on a record eight America's Cup winners but the drawings of more than 2000 boats through a career that spanned more than 50 years. The ingenuity in his designers is a big reason for the United States’ long success in the America’s Cup during the 12mt era.⛵ . Individuals don’t win the America’s Cup. Teams do. Nevertheless, there have been many individuals who have cast more than just a passing shadow across the Auld Mug. Some are known for winning. Some are known for losing. Others are known for what they bring, be it passion, rivalry, infamy, or controversy. They all add to the lore of the America’s Cup and have made it what it is today. Olin Stephens II is one such individual. Born in 1908 and raised near he was introduced to boats on family vacations at Cape Cod. A growing passion for sailing and sailing boats took him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology but after just one term the 19-year-old Olin left and took his career on a more practical path, joining a working yacht design company, it was a decision he would never regret. . His first America’s Cup was assisting Starling Burgess with the J-Class Ranger which won the America's Cup in 1937. From 1958 to 1980 he was the original designer of six out of seven successful 12 Metre America’s Cup Defenders. Other than Ranger, the most remarkable of his defenders was Intrepid with the first fin and skeg configuration with a trim tab at the aft end of the keel combined to the rudder with the same steering mechanism. . Olin Stephens lived his passion for yacht design through one of the most exciting eras in the sport of sailing. From the days of paper and pencil to the advent of computer technology and velocity prediction programs, Stephens straddled the gap over science and art. . In September 2008, Olin Stephens passed away, aged 100, and the sailing world mourned the loss of one of its true heroes. All seven races were close but the final race goes down in history as proof anything can happen in sailing.
