My whole life I never knew what exactly I am. From what I know, I’m Mexican/Hispanic/Latino etc. but I have no family who was actually born in Mexico. Everyone in my family was born in California. My mother, father, grandmother and grandfather all speak English. I only know my mothers side of the family. My father never knew who his mother or father were, he only knew his grandmother and sadly I never got meet her. This week I met an Egyptian relative for the first time! This sweet guy was raised on a farm north of Cairo and immigrated to the US with his young family in the late 60’s. Despite being a more distant (3rd cousin or farther) match, he welcomed me as if I was a long lost niece. It was a heart warming and intensely emotional step in connecting with my heritage. #npe #halfegyptian

Often, we talk about this online world and how it isn’t real. We reference the feeds and the stories that we tell, but what about the curated stories we tell ourselves? The narrative we repeat over and over again that have become our reality and how we think, behave, and go after the things of this world. ⁣ ⁣ What happens when that truth is questioned? Or when we are desperately ready for change OR no longer want to be what we once were? How do you exist between what was and what IS now?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I just came back from a trip to the Bay Area that will undoubtedly shape the rest my life, but it will also be a marker of where I will look back on my life and what and how I talked about and saw myself changed. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ It will be the reminder of when I realize that life is full of the “light and airy” and the hard and heavy and BOTH are necessary for a life worth living. It is the things we’ve come to believe about ourselves and the things we don’t want to believe anymore. It’s who we grew up believing we would be and the permission to change our mind. It’s experiencing great disappointment and the victory after the storm. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This trip will be a marker in the sand for me for when I realized that living in this world doesn’t mean telling the same story over and over, but understanding our stories are constantly changing and that although THAT story I’ve come to know has defined me and made me who I am, this one will too, and it’s okay to lay that past down for something new. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What story are you telling yourself? Are you leaving room for life to suddenly change in an instant and will you be ready OR are you playing it safe, like planning for an algorithm?
